  3. Experience • You fall in love with someone from a different faith history. In that church, baptism comes at the “age of reason” and is a conscious decision to belong to Christ. Because you are going there with someone you love, you are asked if you would like to be (re)baptized. What will you say?

Discussion & reflection: • Is there anything wrong with being re-baptized? • Augustine of Hippo (13 Nov 354 – 28 Aug 430, Tunisia) The custom of the Mother Church in baptizing infants is not to be scorned, nor is it to be regarded in any way as unnecessary, nor is it to be believed that its tradition is anything except apostolic.

  5. Discussion & reflection: • We are born into a sinful world and are part of this sinful world. Baptism frees us from the power of being born in sin. Does Confession and Absolution at the beginning of worship return us to that newly baptized state? • Chrysostom (circa 347 – 407, Turkey) And why, someone will say, if the baptism takes away all our sins, is it not called the bath of the remission of sins…For it does create us anew and it fashions us again…

Discussion & reflection: • Assuming you don’t throw your baptism away by forgetting God and living as if there were no God, do you expect to have a new, physical body in heaven? • Ambrose of Milan (circa 337 – 4 Apr 397, Italy) If the earth and heaven are renewed, why should we doubt that human beings, on account of whom heaven and earth were made, can be renewed?

Discussion & reflection: • What is the reason you think you will live in heaven forever? • Cyprian of Carthage ( - 14 Sep 258, Tunisia) Oh, what and how great will that day be…when the Lord will…count up his people and to recognize…what each one deserves… but will pay the reward of our faith and devotion.

  8. Discussion & reflection: • Do you think everyone will be saved for eternal life (universal salvation)? If so, why? • Ignatius of Antioch (circa 35-50 – circa 98-117, Turkey) Do not be mistaken, my brothers. Those who corrupt the families will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  9. Discussion & reflection: • Do you think Jesus will return to the earth? When? • Cyril of Jerusalem (circa 313-386, Israel) We preach not one coming of Christ but a second as well, far more glorious than the first. The first gave us a spectacle of his patience; the second will bring with it the crown of the kingdom of God.
