  2. Decision-Making Procedures • Defined- describes structured methods of decision making that coordinate group members’ communication, keep members focused on the issues at hand, and guide members through the process of problem diagnosis, solution selection, or solution implementation.

Types of Decision-Making Procedures • Brainstorming- allows groups to generate a bunch of ideas or solutions to problems. • To utilize effectively, follow these four rules: Rule 1- No evaluation should occur during the session Rule 2- Members should generate as many ideas as possible quickly Rule 3-Members should be encouraged to be creative, wild, and crazy Rule 4- Piggybacking or hitchhiking on each other’s ideas is important

Types of Decision-Making Procedures • Nominal Group Technique (NGT)- allows members to generate ideas independently, then combine ideas afterwards, and later view the process as one they worked as a group. • Four Step process with a facilitator: Step 1- generate ideas silently with all members recording their idea Step 2- Record ideas, no evaluation, make sure all members are represented Step 3-Make sure all fully understand all the ideas, questions and answers, still no evaluation Step 4- Vote, rank-order, discuss

  5. Types of Decision-Making Procedures • Ideawriting- focuses on a single topic and produces a written product. Strength is silent evaluation of ideas. • Four steps: Step 1- List out three or four ideas with reasons Step 2- Select a list other than your own and respond to it with suggestions, solutions, other ideas. Step 3- Read other members comments to list you first created, and respond to their suggestions, solutions, ideas. Step 4- Summarize from all lists and move forward with those with merit

Types of Decision-Making Procedures • Six Thinking Hats- simplifies the process by having group focus solely on one aspect of a decision at a time. • Six Hats: White- neutral and objective by providing facts and figures Red- emotional by legitimizing members’ emotions and feelings about the decision

  7. Types of Decision-Making Procedures Black- a cautious approach by centering on the negative aspects Yellow- optimistic approach by focusing on the positive aspects Green- creative approach by exploring alternatives of the decision Blue- Procedural approach by monitoring the decision-making procedures used by the group
