Think Tank Time

Think Tank Time. ATTENTION!! Your class has been selected to work in engineering teams to complete an important challenge. Do you know an engineer? Do you know what kinds of work engineers do? Take 2 minutes to think about the work of engineers. Discuss your ideas with your team.

  1. Think Tank Time ATTENTION!! Your class has been selected to work in engineering teams to complete an important challenge. Do you know an engineer? Do you know what kinds of work engineers do? • Take 2 minutes to think about the work of engineers. • Discuss your ideas with your team.

  2. Engineering Design ChallengeMagnify Your Life Day 1

  3. Working as a TEAM • As you watch the video, focus on why engineers had to work together to design a lifesaving apparatus. Apollo 13 Movie clip (5:35)

  4. Engineering Design Challenge Problem: A National Medical Research organization, NMR, has received a grant to research, develop, and create a prototype (model) of a magnification systemthat magnifies cancer cells at a 1:2 ratio (twice their original size). If successful, the prototype will be used to develop an improved magnification system for studying cancer cells that attack platelets in the blood.

  5. Think Tank Time How could you get this image…. To this size? From this size…

  6. Where would you project the image?

  7. Convex Lenses Lenses and mirrors are curved pieces of glass or plastic that can “bend” light rays in different directions How is this convex mirror curved? Convex are thicker in the middle and thin out at the edges. These lenses magnify .

  8. Exploring Convex Lenses • What happens to an image projected through a convex lens? • What happens if you move the lens?; the image?; the screen? • What things did you learn about how aconvex lens works?

  9. Criteria (Musts) • The image must be magnified to twice the original size. • The apparatus must support the designed magnification system.

  10. Criteria (musts): • The image must be magnified to twice the original size. • The apparatus must support the designed magnification system. Constraints (limits): • Use only one convex lens as a magnifier. • Construct the projection system using only the materials provided.

  11. Engineering Design ChallengeMagnify Your Life Day 2

  12. Think Tank Time • Think about the steps of the Engineering Design Process. • Which steps has your team already worked through? • Which steps will you work on next?
