  1. Do Now Elephant poem

  2. Scientific Method Carrying Out an Experiment

  3. Valid and Reliable Valid Reliable Dependable Responsible Trustworthy Recognized as valid! • Accepted • Accurate • Just • Solid • Sound • Well-founded • Credible • Authentic

  4. Question Definition: What are you trying to figure out? Example: Which type of bubble gum blows the biggest bubble?

  5. Hypothesis Definition: An educated guess about the results Example: The Bubblicious gum will blow a bigger bubble than the Trident gum.

  6. Independent Variable Definition: The factor that the experimenter CHANGES in the experiment. It’s the thing you are testing Independent Variable = I change it Example: The types of bubble gum change in this experiment.

  7. Dependent Variable Definition: The factor in the experiment that changes because of the independent variable (The dependent variable DEPENDS on the independent variable) The DATA you are gathering Example: The size of the bubble

  8. Control Group Definition: The group in the experiment held constant (NOT CHANGED) to compare the experimental group to. Example: In this experiment there is no control group

  9. Constants Definition: The factors that are kept the same for all groups in the experiment. Example: Same type of gum, same chewer, same number of warm-up chews, same amount of pressure while blowing the bubble

  10. Procedure Definition: The steps to carry out the experiment • Example: • Unwrap and chew the piece of gum for two minutes. • Blow bubble. • Measure bubble. • Record data

  11. Observations Definition: Data gathered using your 5 senses (QUALITATIVE and QUANTITATIVE) Example: The measurement of the bubble

  12. Data Table Definition: Way to organize data Example:

  13. Conclusion Definition: A paragraph in which you describe your results

  14. Key Topic Intro to Bio Unit 1 Scientific Method Vocab is about… How to carry out an experiment Main idea Main idea Main idea Essential details Essential details Essential details Definition: The factor that you CHANGE in the experiment. Also, the thing being tested Definition: What are you trying to figure out? Definition: An educated guess about the results Independent Variable = I change it Example: The types of bubble game change in this experiment.

The information or DATA you are gathering Keep one group UNCHANGED so you know what would happen if you weren’t doing the experiment Main idea Main idea Main idea Essential details Essential details Essential details Definition: The steps to carry out the experiment Definition: Data gathered using your 5 senses (qualitative and quantitative) Definition: A paragraph in which you describe your results
