The Process… • Define Service Learning • Identify resources and issues in the community • Brainstorm issues (International, National, and Community) and Discover Needs • Research! • Narrow Down the Issues/Choose a Focus Issue • Speaking on the Issue • Decide on a Project • Decide on an Action Plan! (SMART) • Contact community partners/school partners • Implement Project • Reflect. Reflect. Reflect.

  3. Period 1: Care for Families of Soldiers • Need: Support/Recognition for Active Soldiers and their families • Action Plan: Collect donations and create a Care Package for the family of a soldier currently stationed overseas • Partners: Army National Guard Family Readiness Group

  4. Contents of Packages: • Gift Cards (Target and Grocery) • Toys • Sports Equipment • Hand written Cards/Notes • Books • Snacks and Candy

  5. Period 2: Bike to School/Walk to School Day • Problem/Need: Air pollutants in the Community • Action Plan: Sponsor a Bike to School/Walk to School/Go Green Day • Partners: MHS teachers, staff, and community members

  6. Walk or Bike to School • Participants should sign the pledge sheet if they plan on “going green” on May 18th (Students can find these in their homeroom). • Participants should bike, walk, carpool, scooter, take a bus, or use a form of transportation that uses less energy. • All participants are encouraged to wear green. • Sign in at the tables in front of the cafeterias or in front of the school between 7:00 am and 9:30am if they participated! • The first hundred people to sign in will receive a prize. • Encourage fellow students and staff to participate! • Malden High school is not responsible for bikes or scooters. Please have a plan for locking up your belongings.

  7. Period 3: Video Diary to Soldiers • Need: Lack of Recognition for Soldiers and Veterans of Foreign Wars • Action Plan: Collect sound bites from students/teachers/community members to compile a Video Diary for stationed soldiers • Partners: Malden Access TV/ Teachers/MHS students

  9. Period 4: Teen Job Workshop • Need: Lack of jobs/job skills for teenagers • Action Plan: Sponsor a Jobs Skills Workshop after school focusing on resumes, applications, and interviews • Partners: School Guidance Staff, teachers, other MHS students

  11. Questions for Interviews: • 1. Tell me about yourself. • 2. Why did you leave your last job? • 3. Do you consider yourself successful? • 4. What do you know about this organization? • 5. Why do you want to work for this organization? • 6. Are you a team player? • 7. Why should we hire you?

What we have learned: • It is important to set goals that are realistic, timely, and sustainable. • Get other people involved: school community, friends, parents, city officials, outside partners. • See dead ends as new openings. If something does not work, try a different avenue. • Be organized and budget time well to successfully complete a project. • Choose something that is not only feasible but that will have an observable impact. • Enthusiasm…Be passionate about the issue and excited about the project!
