  1. Taboo • a cultural or religious custom that does not allow people to do, use or talk about a particular thing as people find it offensive or embarrassing www.Englishcat.cn

  2. There are taboos against appearing naked in public places. • If you are from India, you may not eat beef because of your religion. • In India, it is impolite to shake hands or give someone something with your left hand. • Remember not to just put the business cards in your pocket without looking in Japan . www.Englishcat.cn

  3. Writing a letter of apology • Writing an apology letter takes a lot of hard thinking. When you apologize to someone you want to make sure that you write the right words to satisfy that person’s emotions. Sometimes it is hard for us to accept an apology from others; that’s why when writing this type of letter, it is very important that you prove to this person that every word you say comes from your heart and is really meant to be accepted. www.Englishcat.cn

  4. Writing a letter of apology • Another important step is to let the reader know your point in the letter or the reason for deciding to write them this letter. For example: The reason I write this letter to you is because .... This tells the reader that you are about to make a strong point. In this step you want to make sure that the reader understands what the point is. www.Englishcat.cn

  5. Writing a letter of apology • The next thing that needs to be aware of is not only what the problem is but how to solve it. Let the reader know that you were wrong and that you are sorry. What can you do to make it up to that person? • An apology letter does not have any particular rules on how to write them. Therefore, the simplest way to understand is to tell how you feel. www.Englishcat.cn

  6. Dear Bob, • I am writing this letter to apologize to you for the mistake I made in the work. I have acknowledged that my fault has brought you great trouble and inconveniences. I hereby express my deep sorrow for this matter and we are going to do our best to make it up to you. Please forgive my inattention. • I assure you that this mistake will not happen once again and would appreciate very much if you could give us a chance to show our sincerity on this matter. • Best regards, • Tom www.Englishcat.cn

  7. I am terribly sorry to tell you that I have lost the valuable book you were so kind to lend me last week. I read it every day and intended to finish it next month. Last night when I came to my room, it was nowhere to be found. I will try to recover it as soon as possible. If I fail to find it, I will get a new book for you. • But I am afraid it can never take the place of the old one. Old books are like old friends. Once lost, they can never be replaced. And for this irrecoverable loss, I am to blame. I was so careless with my things. This is a warning to me to be more careful in the future. Please accept my sincere apologies. www.Englishcat.cn

  23. Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night • a large model of a man called a Guy • the Guy represents a real person from history • The Gunpowder Plot was quite a well-designed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the occasion when the King was there to open Parliament at the beginning of the new session. So it would have destroyed, it would have killed, almost the whole of the political class. • He was the man who was to light the fuse. He was left there with a watch, and with instructions as to what was to happen. And he was the person who was supposed to light the fuse to this huge stash of gunpowder that had been built up in a cellar over the past several months. www.Englishcat.cn

  24. But – he was caught! • He died a grisly death: he was hung, drawn and quartered. • After this, King James decided that the 5th of November should be a special day of celebration to remember the lucky escape he had, with people lighting bonfires in London. • So people still put a Guy on the bonfire, even though now it is just for fun! Well, that’s about all for this week’s programme. www.Englishcat.cn
