  1. taboo an object, place, person or action that is set apart and is to be avoided because it is either accursed or sacred

  2. taboo • both ancient religions and ones that are practiced today contain a belief in the taboo • the word taboo comes from Polynesia and was first documented by Captain James Cook • some taboo activities are prohibited by law • other taboo activities bring shame, embarrassment or social ostracism

  3. taboos can include: • dietary restrictions (eg. kosher, halal, religious vegetarianism, prohibition of cannibalism) • sexual restrictions (eg. premarital sex, adultery, intermarriage, miscegenation, homosexuality, incest, bestiality, pedophilia, necrophilia) • bodily functions restrictions (eg. Burping, farting, drug use, standards for genetalia, birth control) • exposure restrictions (eg. ankles in Victorian England, faces in some Muslim countries, nudity in Canada) • language restrictions (eg. Profanity, God’s name in vain)

  4. taboos • no taboo is known to be universal • some almost universal taboos include incest and cannibalism • taboos can change over time and lose their ‘sting’ • taboo topics such as mental health, addiction, abuse, AIDS and pregnancy have become more acceptable in our society than they were in the past • other groups’ taboos often seem foolish or weird
