  6. Three Tiers • Airman: (Technician and possibly Supervisor) • NCO: (Technician or Supervisor) • SNCO: (Supervisor, Superintendent and Manager)

  10. Enlisted Leadership/Development Levels Tactical • Normally applies to E1-E6 • Amn/NCOs perfect their primary skills • Attend PME/Achieve 5/7 level • Begin to train others • Primarily focused on accomplishing all assigned tasks as efficiently as possible

  11. Enlisted Leadership/Development Levels Operational • Normally applies to MSgt – CMSgt who typically work at Numbered AF level and below • SNCOs transfer from being experts and first-line supervisors to leaders with broader operational leadership, supervisory and managerial responsibilities

Enlisted Leadership/Development Levels Operational (cont.) • Convert direction from their superiors into mission accomplishment • The majority of the enlisted force will spend their entire career at the Tactical/Operational levels • This is where the natural strengths, technical skills, experience and day-to-day mission focus of the enlisted force …are most required

Enlisted Leadership/Development Levels Strategic • Normally applies to CMSgts and a few other SNCOs assigned to higher headquarters • Serve in key leadership positions @ DOD, Air Staff, Majcom, DRUs • Continue to develop their knowledge of the AF to improve their ability to advise senior leaders • Primary focus is the strategic leadership and management of the force to best meet current/future requirements

  15. Importance • Gives you an understanding of your role in projecting air power • Directly correlates enlisted members’ duties to mission requirements

General Airman Responsibilities Accept and execute all duties, instructions, responsibilities, and lawful orders in a timely, efficient manner Strive for and maintain the highest level of personal readiness to meet Air and Space Expeditionary Force mission requirements Exhibit professional behavior, military bearing, respect for authority, the highest standards of dress and appearance, and exemplary standards of conduct on and off-duty 16

  17. General NCO Responsibilities Accept and execute all duties, instructions, responsibilities, and lawful orders in a timely, efficient manner. Lead subordinates and exercise effective followership in mission accomplishment Maintain the highest level of readiness to meet Air and Space Expeditionary Force mission requirements Be technically ready to accomplish the mission Be physically ready to accomplish the mission Be mentally ready to accomplish the mission Actively support the Air Force’s policy of “zero tolerance” for discrimination and sexual harassment Support and explain leaders' decisions 17

General SNCO Responsibilities In addition to meeting all NCO responsibilities, SNCOs must Provide highly effective leadership Translate their leaders' direction into specific tasks and responsibilities their teams understand and can execute Be an active, visible leader Help leadership make informed decisions Support company grade officers' (CGO) continued development as leaders by sharing knowledge and experience Exceed the standards and expectations levied upon their NCOs and Airmen Continue professional developmental through a variety of means 18

Specific SNCO Responsibilities Master Sergeant Are transitioning from being technical experts and first line supervisors to operational leaders Develop their leadership and management skills MSgt selects should immediately enroll and complete Course 12/14 SNCO PME Distance Learning Course, in preparation for their new roles Senior Master Sergeant Key, experienced, operational leaders, skilled at merging their personnel's talents, skills, and resources with other teams' functions to most effectively accomplish the mission Continue to develop their leadership and management skills in preparation for expanded responsibilities and higher leadership positions 19

Specific SNCO Responsibilities Chief Master Sergeant Superiors and subordinates alike rightfully place very high expectations upon those serving in this grade serve in key leadership roles at all levels in the Air Force from flight-level up to Air Staff must at all times epitomize the finest qualities of a military leader continually strive to further develop their leadership and management skills to better prepare them for future roles must actively develop their Airmen, NCOs, and SNCOs into the enlisted leaders of the future 20

Involvement & Assistance • SNCOs must mentor their subordinates • Assist in adjusting to the military and unit • Observe, counsel, and correct substandard behavior • Appropriately recognize and reward members who excel • Actively participate and encourage education • Make subordinates aware of voting opportunities • Support and participate in unit activities • Implement approved policies, directives, programs • Embrace AF fitness • Stay informed on issues concerning the military

Knowledge of References • All NCOs must be familiar with: • The UCMJ, Joint Ethics Regulation and Military Standards • The mission and history of the AF and unit • Drill and ceremony procedures • AF protocol and customs and courtesies • AF promotion programs • Assignment systems • Awards and decorations programs • Professional and unprofessional relationships • PFE
