  1. Relative Motion

  2. Warm Up “Beauty is Relative” What do the term “Relative” Mean? Relative- Adj. Existing or having its specific nature only by relation to something else. “Relative Motion” The question "is this object moving?" is in fact meaningless unless we specify "moving relative to what other object".

  3. Relative motion is just a way of saying that sometimes different people will say different things about the motion of the same object. http://www.classzone.com/books/ml_science_share/vis_sim/mfm05_pg7_relmotion/mfm05_pg7_relmotion.html

  5. Did YOU know? Frames of reference and relative motion is actually the reason that people get car sick. Your brain is getting two different sets of information about your body's motion that might not exactly agree with each other; information from your eyes, and information from your inner ear. Some people are more sensitive to these differences, which causes them to feel car sick as they watch the road "whiz" by. If you are prone to getting car sickness, try to look forward at a point far in the distance and stay focused on that.

  6. A girl at an airport rolls a ball north on a moving walkway that moves north. If the ball’s speed with respect to the walkway is 0.50 m/s and the walkway moves at a speed of 1.50 m/s, what is the velocity of the ball with respect to the ground? ball’s speed walkway + walkway’s speed ground = ball’s speed ground 0.5 m/s + 1.50 m/s = 2.0 m/s

  7. A river flows due east at 1.5 m/s relative to the shore. A boat maintains a constant velocity of 7.5 m/s due east relative to the river. a) What is the velocity of the boat as viewed by an observer on the shore? boat’s speed river + River’s speed ground = boat’s speed ground 7.5 m/s + 1.5 m/s = 9.0 m/s b) What is the velocity of the boat as viewed by an observer on the shore when the boat is heading back? boat’s speed river + River’s speed ground = boat’s speed ground 7.5 m/s - 1.5 m/s = 6.0 m/s
