Relative Motion

Relative Motion. Relative Motion in 1D. The motion of an object with respect to another object that could also be in motion. ‘ A’ represents the observer and ‘B’ the object of interest. ‘BA’ is object B with respect to A. A. B. v B. v A. v BA. Example.

  1. Relative Motion

  2. Relative Motion in 1D • The motion of an object with respect to another object that could also be in motion. • ‘A’ represents the observer and ‘B’ the object of interest. ‘BA’ is object B with respect to A. A B vB vA vBA

  3. Example A truck is moving east at 10 km/hr and a ball is thrown at 20 km/hr to the east. What is the relative velocity of the ball with respect to the truck.

  4. Example A truck is moving west at 10 km/hr and a ball is thrown at 20 km/hr to the east. What is the relative velocity of the ball with respect to the truck.

  5. Relative Motion in 2D • For relative motion in 2 dimensions, use the Pythagorean theorem. +y vC +x vB vA

  6. Example • An airplane is flying due north at 120 km/hr with a wind that is blowing from west to east at 50 km/hr. What is the airplane’s relative velocity with respect to the ground? vB km/hr = 130 km/hr vA vC

  7. More on the Example • An airplane is flying due north at 120 km/hr with a wind that is blowing from west to east at 50 km/hr. What is the airplane’s relative velocity with respect to the ground? vB km/hr = 130 km/hr vA vC θ The airplane’s velocity is 130 km/hr at 22.6° east of north.
