  2. Made of Cells • A cougar is an animal. • Animal cells have parts like a nucleus, cell membrane, and mitochondria. • Animal cells do not have a cell wall or chloroplasts.

  3. Obtain and Use Energy and Nutrients • Cougars hunt for their food. • They really like deer. • They can eat 10 pounds of meat a day.

  4. Grow and Develop • Kittens are born with spots and a short tail. • As they grow, they lose their spots and their tail gets longer. • They grow from about 1 pound at birth to over 100 pounds at adulthood.

  5. Adaptations • Cougars can run 40 miles per hour to help them catch prey. • They can also jump 16 feet into the air! • Cougars purr to help them communicate with other cougars.

  6. Respond to the Environment • A cougar hunts by stalking or ambushing its prey. • Cougars avoid humans. • Cougars like to live alone. • They scrape together grass and leaves and then urinate on them to mark their territory. • Males will hiss and spit at each other. They will even attack and kill each other to defend their territory.

  7. Reproduce • Cougars only come together to mate. • Females are pregnant for 3 months. • There are usually 2 to 5 kittens in a litter.

  8. Inherit Traits from Parents • Since cougars reproduce sexually, they get half of their genes from each parent. • The genes are on the chromosomes in the nucleus of each cell.
