(applause)• More Thanks to Hidehiko Agata, Toshikazu Ebisuzaki, Naoki Matsumoto, Kaoru Kimura, and many others of LOC of GHOU Tokyo!!• JAHOU: - One of First HOU’s in the World - Invented “Live Show”! Have Vivian operate Yerkes telescope for Live show -- others should follow! - First Helped Invent and Define the term “Internet Telescope for education -- e.g., KIT - Built on and translated US Curriculum - Hosted Previous GHOU in Misato - Has great teachers, astronomers, scientists, planetarium people, students, and others.

  3. LOTS AND LOTS HAPPENING SINCE LAST GHOU! BUT WE AREN’T VERY GOOD AT COMMUNICATING NEWS! • NUMBERS OF TEACHERS • NUMBERS OF STUDENTS REACHED • NUMBER OF TRAINING SESSIONS • LIST OF OUTREACH ACTIVITIES • MEDIA/PRESS APPEARANCES • PLANNING ACTIVITIES AHEAD • SHARING EXPERTISE GLOBALLY

  4. It’s an honor and privilege to be here with you all. Our Passions and Dreams and Capabilties ARE GHOU’s Core Strengths: • Smart and capable people really, really dedicated to getting Real Astronomy to students and teachers • Often putting the well-being of GhOU above everything else (Border Guard story …) • Building cross-cultural collaboration, communication, and innovation --GHOU is a great model for the world -- we work hard together and like each other. Amazing Chemistry! We want all nations to join and share. • Particularly, advancing astronomy education andthe well-being of the planet. It is time to grow to 100 nations in five to seven years!! Add 5 more nations next, year, 7 - 10 next..

  5. Some Goals of GHOU: • Work in Progress with Rosa Doran: • Structure an international astronomy education systems that develops and shares: • o Curriculum and activities and software • o High technology, simple instruments, such as web-cam astronomy • o Teacher training and support • o Integration of real astronomy into real curriculum of the nation • o Telescopes and Networks of Telescopes, data bases

  6. The “Growing Partners” Dimension : Institutions and People we are partnering with: • Jackson State University, Florida Institute of Technology, UC Berkeley, and several others in the US and around he world. George Smoot (this year’s Nobelist) and the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics, • LCOGT and Faulkes Team, Ironwood (North and non-North) Observatory • Northern Ireland Space Office and Armagh Planetarium • International Rotary Club, Girl Scouts in US • British Council, Some Official Foreign Consulates in Discussion • COSMOS in Africa, Nuclio in Portugal, Thailand Groups, etc. It is time to bring in more partners so GHOU can advance our and their goals respectfully and well.

  7. Parametric View of Some Statistics: Nations: -- we are close to having seeds in 10% of Earth’s nations

  8. HOU and Education Education is complex -- many factors required for deep success: • Good and continuous Teacher Training and support (on-going during school year and summer) • Educating other educators that Technology and Key Skills integration is necessary for children. • Integration into each national curriculum or after school or science center system • Good Telescopes • Lesson study (from Japan)

  9. United States Example: US HOU has some Impact on Teachers -- Plot of #’s of Teachers Trained (error bars not known)

  10. In the US, we Have Reached Some Children -- BUT EVERY GHOU NATION MUST KEEP TRACK OF THEIR NUMBERS!! -- IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET FUNDING

  11. Research Projects by Students and Teachers: Proven and Now Growing Again • Early Supernovae and Asteroid Discoveries Indicated we have capabilities and market -- please join International Asteroid Search -- ISAAC! • • Research is back now! Asteroids! Supernovae! Quasar Light Curves! Soon Exoplanets! Jupiter in Four Years

  12. Telescope Network News: • LCOGT on the Move and growing. • INO Cranking Away -- retired Helicopter Pilot Charges on for Polish and other kids … (see next view graph) • Ken Archer Telescope Systems -- stay tuned. • 1000 telescopes could give one image per person once in their educational career. More is better … (but they could also share other images …) • Subset of some 35 Networks of other telescopes are going to build some inter-operability.. Meeting this September in Chicago!!

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! THIS IS A COLLABORATION.

  16. Progress in Software • Salsa J improvements nearly scheduled -- Eight nations working for Salsa J now. Free and open source and easily revised, expanded. • Other GHOU softwares can inform and help Salsa J -- Makailii, US HOU, etc. • This software solution of Salsa J is solving problems met around the world. (we will use Salsa J in Beijing Workshop -- Arabic Version now!)

  17. African HOU Pacific HOU GHOU Building Blocks North American HOU South American HOU
