LEADING UPTO THE BATTLE The British General Howe was determined to reach Philadelphia. Washington, the General of the Colonies, believed that they could stop the British from getting there. The Colonial troops lined up across the Brandywine River, in order to guard the fords. He wanted to force a fight at Chadds Ford, and was positive that all the fords were guarded. However, the British made a plan to cross the river at a ford that Washington did not know about. They were going to pretend, though, that they got “caught” by Washington.
September 11, 1777 Washington found out that Howe had divided his forces, but still believed that all the fords were guarded. He thought that the British were going to show up at Chadds Ford. George Washington realized he had been outwitted, and ordered his army to take high ground at a Meeting House. So……. Who won!?!??!?!
The Result SEPTEMBER 26 The British continued moving towards Philadelphia and had a pretty easy time doing so. The Colonists were not really trying to stop them at this point, and The British finally took over on September 26. Washington had already made Congress move out of Philadelphia, so they went to Lancaster and then York. Important military supplies were moved from Philadelphia to Reading, Pennsylvania.
The colonists blamed the loss on the fact that they did not know their surroundings.
Interesting Part of the Story The British actually took a half-hour break to stop for lunch and tea. They felt safe so they took the time to refresh and rest. This was after marching for about 11 hours, and 17 miles.
