Basic Model for IGD at Carleton • Peer-led student conversations about diversity, conflict, and community at Carleton • For academic credit • Led by trained student facilitators • Supported by faculty/staff coaches • Informed by curriculum of readings and writing assignments • Integrates theory and personal experience; explores future possibilities for transformation

The Program and the Courses • Fall course (trains student leaders) • IDSC 203: Talking about Diversity (4 credits) • by application only; taught by 1 faculty member (with involvement from Dean of Students staff); trains students to be (potential) peer facilitators for IDSC 103 • Winter course (peer-led dialogues) • IDSC 103: Student Conversations about Community and Diversity (2 credits) • led by students; overseen by faculty/staff coaches; offered in several sections

  5. IDSC 203: Talking about Diversity (fall 2010) • Taught by Professor Adriana Estill and Associate Dean Joe Baggot • 2 credits; S/CR/NC; by application only • 10 students did readings, journal writing, reflective essay, lesson planning and facilitation practice

  6. IDSC 103: Conversations about Community and Diversity (winter 2011) • 36 participants met in 4 sections of student- led conversations and dialogue • 2 credits; 10 weeks; S/CR/NC • Syllabus: readings, weekly journal prompts, 2 reflective essays; strict attendance policy • Lesson plans created by faculty • Faculty and staff “coaches” met with student facilitators weekly to discuss course matters

Student Comments (patterns): • Heightened awareness of self and others; increased comfort in speaking openly about social identities and diversity; developed listening skills; acquired vocabulary for talking about diversity • Unique atmosphere: not replicated in typical academic or extracurricular settings; different leadership style; transparent rules for dialogue; more honesty

  10. Next Steps: • Spring 2011: Assessment of IDSC 103 and 203; gathering of perspectives on future of program • Fall 2011: IDSC 203 (course for student facilitators) will be offered by Professor Meera Sehgal • Winter 2012: IDSC 103 will be offered for a second time, in multiple sections
