  3. Definition/Examples of Core Function Screening and Assessment: • Includes programs that are designed to identify possible barriers to early learning. For example, speech delays or hearing problems.

  4. Definition/Examples of Core Function Communication & Social/Emotional Issues • These programs offer services which address behavioural/emotional issues. Examples: • Prevention of aggression/bullying in children. • Anger management for parents with children with Developmental Delays and whose behaviours present challenges in the home.

  5. Definition/Examples of Core Function Public Health • The goal of these programs is to promote health through education. • Some programs offer assessment and counseling, while others provide information and resources to help clients make healthy choices.

  6. Definition/Examples of Core Function Nutrition Programs • Most of the nutrition programs available provide breakfast and snacks to children attending elementary schools. • Some programs provide meals and health education to expecting and new parents.

  7. Definition/Examples of Core Function Parenting Programs • A wide variety of programs that cover a variety of topics related to child rearing and parenting in supportive group settings.

  8. Definition/Examples of Core Function • Child Care • Licensed centre-based child care facilities provide preschool programs in an educational environment. • Before and after school licensed care for children 4 to 12 years.

  9. Definition/Examples of Core Function • Preschool • These programs offer opportunities for preschoolers to learn while playing by providing a rich environment in which they can explore and experiment while interacting with other children. • School readiness is a major component.

  10. Definition/Examples of Core Function JK/SK • Children are given opportunities to explore, solve problems and interact with others. • Intellectual stimulation, development, social/emotional development and self-discipline are all emphasized.

  11. Definition/Examples of Core Function Preschool Speech and Language • These programs provide speech and language services to help improve children’s communication. • Assessment and therapy. • Available in French and English

  12. Definition/Examples of Core Function Infant Hearing • These programs provide both assessment and therapy. • Provide communication programming. • Provide prescription and fitting of amplification and other assistive devices. • Available in French and English.

  13. Definition/Examples of Core Function Recreation Program: • A wide variety of programs that provide opportunities for physical activities and that promote health.

Community Services Inventory (CSI) • The CSI was designed to enable us to collect information about the community’s strengths and gaps with respect to services and supports for young children and their families. • It is for the purpose of broad-based community planning, analysis, and research. • It has been utilized and updated since 2002. • It allows us to extract program information at the community level.
