  1. FRACTION OPERATIONS ADDITION SUBTRACTION 1. Find a common denominator. 2. Rewrite using equivalent fractions with the common denominator. 3. Add the fractions together (numerators only). 4. Simplify the answer. Changes for mixed numbers: 1. Add the whole numbers together. 2. Follow the same steps above. 1. Find a common denominator. 2. Rewrite using equivalent fractions with the common denominator. 3. Subtract the fractions (numerators only). 4. Simplify the answer. Changes for mixed numbers: 1. Subtract the whole numbers. 2. Follow the same steps above. When the top fraction is smaller than the bottom fraction: 1. Borrow (subtract) one whole from the whole number. 2. Add the one whole to the fraction. For example, 1/6 becomes 7/6. 3. Subtract and simplify as done above. MULTIPLICATION DIVISION 1. If possible, simplify before multiplying. To simplify, find a common factor for one of the numerators and one of the denominators. Divide both numbers by the common factor. 2. Multiply the two numerators. 3. Multiply the two denominators. 4. Simplify the answer. Changes for mixed numbers: 1. Convert each mixed number into an improper fraction. 2. Follow the same steps above. Changes for whole numbers: 1. Convert each whole number into an improper fraction. 2. Follow the same steps above. 1. Change the problem into a multiplication problem. This requires changing the operator to a multiplication sign and by taking the reciprocal of the second number. 2. Follow all of the steps in the multiplication box. Changes for mixed numbers: 1. Convert each mixed number into an improper fraction. 2. Follow the same steps above. Changes for whole numbers: 1. Convert each whole number into an improper fraction. 2. Follow the same steps above.
