I Allied Plan for Victory & Turning of the Tide • Stalin wants allies to open front in west to relieve pressure in the east • 2 fronts = fighting in 2 regions • Plan = weaken Germany on 2 fronts death blow • Start attack in N Africa angers Stalin-wanted France • General “Monty” beats “desert fox” retreat • Operation Torch lead by Eisenhower destruction of AfrikaKorps
After winter is over in Russia Hitler sending troops to seize oil fields & to capture Stalingrad =Major industrial center Battle of Stalingrad • Luftwaffe destroys city but Russians ordered not to retreat • Russia counters but German’s ordered not to retreat • Battle of Stalingrad = TURNING POINT of war • Germany took too many losses and could only defend & retreat from this point on
Italian Campaign • Allies attack Italy toppling of Mussolini • Mussolini fired by King but back by Hitler • Allies enter & Mussolini captured • Shot & hung in Milan square
II Life on Allied Home Fronts • US convert peacetime factories to wartime production shortage of consumer goods • Millions of Americans working in war industries (women) • Allied powers propaganda to inspire more effort on home front • Also prejudice prop after Pearl Harbor • Japanese Internment

From France they head to Germany from the west • Hitler orders large counterattack in west to split allied troops • Broke into American lines giving it the name Battle of the Bulge • Allies eventually win Hitler’s losses lead him to only be able to retreat from that point on • Hitler & his wife commit suicide • Eisenhower accepts unconditional surrender from the Third Reich • V-E Day = victory in Europe Day
