  2. I-PREFIXES • Dis: means away, apart, • e.g. 'disarm' means to remove or take weapons away

  3. MIS_ • mis means 'wrong' or 'badly‘ • e.g. 'misfortune' is when your are not lucky and things go wrong or badly

  4. UNDER_ • under means 'below' or 'beneath‘ • e.g. 'underground' means below or beneath the ground

  5. OVER_ • over means upper, outer, over, superior or excessive • e.g. 'overweight' means too heavy or fat

  6. RE_ • re means again • e.g. 'replay' means to play something again

  7. ANTI- • anti means against, in opposition to • e.g. 'anticlockwise' is opposite to the direction that the hands of a clock move in

  8. ANTE_ • ante means before • e.g. 'antenatal' means before giving birth

  9. CONTRA/ COUNTER- • CONTRA opposite, protecting • contradiction, contraceptive, counterfeit, counter offer

  10. dis - away,  not • disappear, disable, dismiss, disregard

  11. ex-  out of, away from, former • exceed, ex-president

  12. EXTRA- • extra - outside, additional • extraordinary, extraterrestrial

  13. OUT- • out -more than; outdo another, externally • outrun, outdo, outstanding, outrageous

  14. OVER- • over -more than, excessive, located above, movement to a lower position • overworked, overrun

  15. POST_ • post means after • e.g. 'postpone' means to put something off until later, or after it was originally planned

  16. Prefixes meaning NOT • Un e.g. 'unhurt' means 'not hurt‘ • Im e.g. 'impolite' means 'not polite‘ • Ile.g. 'illegal' means 'not legal‘ • Ine.g. 'informal' means 'not formal‘ • Ir e.g.'irregular' means 'not regular‘ • dis e.g. 'disagree' means 'not agree‘

  17. II- SUFFIXES __IBLE / ___ABLE • 1-ible • If the root is not a complete word, add -ible. aud + ible = audible • Examples: • visible • horrible • terrible • possible • edible • eligible • incredible • permissible

  18. 2-able • If the root is a complete word, add -able. accept + able = acceptable • Examples: • fashionable • laughable • suitable • dependable • comfortable • If the root is a complete word ending in -e, drop the final -e and add -able.excuse - e+ able = excusableExamples: • advisable • desirable • valuable • debatable

  19. NB. Words ending in ‘e’ • If the root is a complete word ending in -e, drop the final -e and add -able. • excuse - e+ able = excusable • Advise______________advisable • Desire_______________desirable • Value________________valuable • Debate_______________debatable
