Historical Significance • Arthur Tappan co-founded the American Anti-Slavery Society (AAS) with William Lloyd Garrison and was appointed president of the society 2 years later. • He founded the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society with his brother Lewis, when the AAS became too radical. • He and Theodore Dwight Weld formed the Liberty Party together and successfully convinced many politicians to enforce anti-slavery in their campaigns. • After the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, Arthur Tappan became radical and began to openly give money to the Underground Railroad.
