  1. Do Now Have your DEDs out on your desk to be checked! Journal Prompt Write about a time when honesty, yours or someone else’s, played a role in a conflict in your life.

  2. Reading • John Proctor • Elizabeth Proctor • Mary Warren • Reverend John Hale • Francis Nurse • Giles Corey • Ezekial Cheever • Marshal Herrick

  3. Discussion • What events led up to the arrest of Elizabeth Proctor? • Why do you think Abigail waited over a week to accuse Elizabeth?

  4. Plot Map • With a partner, fill in the Plot Map for Act Two of The Crucible. • Key • Exposition – setting/beginning • Rising Action – leads up to the climax • Climax – Turning Point / The Act leads up to this… • Falling Action – What happens after the climax • Resolution – how the act ends

  5. Theme in Act Two • With a partner, you will find 2 examples that go with each theme for one of the acts in the play. • Then, you will go to a new partner who had the other act and share.

  6. Character Chart • Now it is time to look at the characters in the Act Two and note how some of them have changed. • Details, details, details! Try to use words or phrases from the play to describe them. • You may work on this alone or with a new partner that you have not worked with today.

  7. Reader Response Advice • A claim is an opinion you are trying to prove, not a statement of fact. • So far in Act 1 of The Crucible, the setting is very eerie and dark. = opion • So far in Act 1, The Crucible takes place in a bedroom. = fact • Remember to include all parts of the response. • Conclusion = Your reaction + Author’s Purpose • I liked / didn’t like… I thought that this theme was interesting because…I was confused when… AND I think Arthur Miller included this…He wanted…

  8. Advice Continued • Don’t forget to connect your proof to your claim and to only try to prove one claim. • For example… • So far in Act One of The Crucible, Reverend Parris is shown both as a pious minister and as a flawed man. • When asked to talk to the scared parishoners, Parris says, “I’ll lead them in a psalm, but let you say nothing of witchcraft yet” (17). He wants to comfort them with the psalm because they are afriad. He is, however, still concerned about himself and the rumor.

  9. Homework • Reader Response on Act Two – remember, character or theme are your best focus. • Quiz next class on just Act Two • Know characters & how they’re different now • Major events both on and off stage • The trials • The case against John & Elizabeth • Hale’s thoughts
