  3. Purpose of Professional Development Plan (PDP) • Mechanism for license renewal between educator and the State of Wisconsin • Show how educators plan to increase their proficiency on the WI Educator Standards • Recognize the link between teaching and student learning

  4. Pre-Service Portfolio PDP • IHE initiated • Academic Process • External Motivation • Address All Standards • Evidence is collected on All Standards • Evaluated by IHE • Job-embedded • Self-directed • Intrinsic motivation • Addressed 2 or more standards • 3-5 pieces of evidence • Verified

  5. Licensure Cycle • Initial Educator 3-5 years • Professional 5 years • Master (optional) 10 years

  6. Initial Educator License • 3-5 year license, non-renewable if activated • Initial Educator license may be renewed if the initial educator has not been employed as an educator for at least 3 years in the 5 year period • Educator develops PDP addressing 2 or more standards • PDP is verified by majority of 3 member Initial Educator Review Team (IHE, Admin, Peer)

  7. District Requirements of PI-34 • Provide ongoing orientation collaboratively developed and delivered by school boards, administrators, teachers, support staff, and parents/families • Provide support seminars reflecting WI Teaching Standards and the mission & goals of the school • Provide a qualified mentor • Designate an administrator who may serve on the initial educator’s PDP team

  8. Role of the Mentor • To provide support for the Initial Educator • To assist the Initial Educator in the reflection process in preparation for development of the PDP

  9. What if I What actually want to teach for more than 5 years? My Initial Educator License is non-renewable and expires after 5 years…

  10. 5 Year PDP Timeline • Year 1: Reflection • Year 2: PDP Goal Approval • Submit to PDP & PDP Goal Approval Form to Team by Jan. 1st • Send Signed PDP Goal Approval Form(s) to DPI • Years 2 - 4: Document Professional Growth and Complete Annual Reviews • Years 3-5: PDP Verification • Submit PDP, Evidence, & PDP Verification Form to PDP Team between July 1st & Jan. 15th • PDP Team Approves/Disapproves by April 1st • Send Approved PDP Verification Form(s), Application, Fee, Employment Verification to DPI, etc.

  11. Initial Educator PDP Team • IHE, Admin, Peer who have completed DPI PDP Reviewer Training • If 2 of 3 members verify goal/plan then send the form(s) into DPI • If at least 2 members do not verify goal/plan the initial educator may make revisions & resubmit to the team • Initial Educators may make appeals to the state superintendant • DPI Reviewer Database • http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/tepdl/pdpteammembers.html • SEWNTP Reviewer Database • http://www.stritch.edu/pi34/

  12. The majority of your PDP team approves of your plan, and, 3-5 years later, they agree that you met your goals. Now what? You are issued a 5-year RENEWABLE Professional Educator License.

  13. To get the professional educator license renewed, you are required to draft ANOTHER PDP, but this time. . . • 3 “like-licensed” peers (teachers, pupil services, admin) who have completed DPI PDP Reviewer Training • Majority reviews and verifies completion of the PDP in year 5 of the cycle • PDP goal does not need to be approved

  14. The PDP Goal • Self-directed • Allows for flexibility • Goal relates to professional development and student achievement I will . . . . What you want to learn & why? So that . . . Data driven (provides evidence of use in the classroom)

  15. Process of Writing a PDP • The goal addresses 2 or more of the Wisconsin Educator Standards • Once a goal has been established, the plan is developed (objective, activities, and collaboration ideas) • Throughout the process, the plan is carried out through activities, collaboration, collection of evidence, and reflection
