  4. How Well Is Cyber-Security/Safety Taught? National Cyber Security Alliance – Microsoft Corporation – Zogby/463 May 2011 • Study conducted with: • 1,012 Teachers (68% Content, 4% Technology, 2% Media Spec., 25% Other, 1% Not Sure) • 200 Technology Coordinators • 402 School Administrators(325 Principals, 77 Superintendents)

  5. Question – Cyber-ethics, Cyber-safety and Cyber-security curriculum should be taught in schools. Question – How prepared are you to talk about the following – Basic computer security such as the need for security software, passwords and backing up data

  6. Which, if any, of the following topics related to cyber-safety have you taught in the last 12 months?

  7. What Should Be Taught? The Short List What risks there are online (i.e. predators, cyberbullies, scams) Making the decision about what personal information to share online How to handle online situations, who to tell and when Respecting both yours and others privacy online; what happens to that privacy when you put information out on the internet.

  8. What Should Be Taught? Nancy Willard, Teacher/Author, says student actions should be put to the following tests: The Golden Rule Test – How would you feel if someone did the same thing to you? The Front Page Test – How would you feel if what you did was reported on the front page of the newspaper? The Mentor Test – Think of someone you trust and respect. How would that person act? What would he or she think of what you are doing? The Real-World Test – Compare your action to something similar in the real world? Would you still do it?

Online Resources For Cyber-Security/Safety Curriculum www.cybersmart.org Has excellent curriculum designed for K-12. www.ikeepsafe.org Internet Keep Safe Coalition has games and other activities online to teach basic Internet safety. www.netsmartz.org Cosponsored by National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Provides information on Internet safety www.webwisekids.org Specializes in preventing online child victimization through simulation games in classrooms

  10. When Is The Best Time To Teach Cyber-Security/Safety? When there is a current event, (i.e. cyberbullying), in the news…have students journal about the event! When you give an assignment that requires the students to use the internet! When it can be tied into class projects…include it in the rubric! At the beginning of the year have students create a classroom online safety list! Let them make posters to hang in class! Bring in a guest speaker, or better yet, find a online webcast for students to watch!

  11. What Is An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)? The AUP is an agreement between the student, parent and school district that specifically defines the policies and procedures when using any of the school district’s computer network(s), as well as, access to the Internet.

  12. Why Is An AUP Is Important? To protect the Student from themselves. To protect the Teacher from themselves and Students. To protect the School District from all of the above. In all seriousness, the AUP is a tool to educate and protect all parties from the actions/decisions that may cause any of the parties using a network system harm. Closer Look At OKCPS’s AUP

  13. The Internet’s Role In Education In 5-10 Years These are just a few predictions that I have come across in the last 12 months… Students will learn digitally from whatever they carry with them. Computers are getting smaller and more, yes, mobile… Educators will have to know how to personalize learning through technology…”digital differentiation” Web 2.0 is quickly being replaced by the Cloud, which will move forward to something new…
