Current knowledge • Since 2008: Approximately over 2300 consults took place regarding issues faced by Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members with disabilities.(Saxton-Barney 2010) • 97 % of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who experience disabilities and their families and carers do not trust their service providers ( both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal) (Saxton-Barney 2008) dicc/vadn:presentation:2010

  5. Knowledge cont.. • Aboriginal people with disabilities in Victoria report dual disabilities at 5 times more than non-Aboriginal people. ( Saxton-Barney 2009) • Criminal Justice system /Legal services workers and support officers are reporting alarming rates of nearly 23% more Aboriginal inmates presenting with undiagnosed disabilities.(Saxton –Barney, 2010) • Risk of abuse to Aboriginal women and children with disabilities is 47% higher than non-Aboriginal women and children, (Cripps, Saxton-Barney 2009) dicc/vadn:presentation:2010
