  1. Laboratory Methods in Biological Chemistry Theory and practice of common biological laboratory methods: solution preparation, spectrophotometry, electrophoresis, DNA manipulations, and biological, chemical, and radiological safety

  2. Idea Behind the Course • Provide practical experiences in laboratory activities that will help students make the transition from content-based lower division courses to application orientated senior level courses. • Provide skills and dispositions needed to carry out laboratory research as part of a career in the life sciences. This includes undergraduate research, working as a technician, graduate research, and affiliated professions.

  3. Role in Your Curriculum

  4. Objectives • To give students experience in dimensional analysis used in microbiology and cellular and molecular biology

  5. Objectives • To familiarize the students with the theory and practice of preparing solutions from various starting materials.

  6. Objectives • To introduce the students to means of preparing sterile media and solutions.

  7. Objectives • To allow students to practice quantifying bacteria and viruses, and to measure the growth rates of bacterial populations.

  8. Objectives • To allow students to quantify proteins, nucleic acids and other chemicals in solution.

  9. Objectives • To introduce students to commonly used devices including, but not limited to: microliter pipetters, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, pH meters, etc.

  10. Objectives • To introduce the students to the use of enzymes for end-point determination and to the measurement of enzyme activity.

  11. Objectives • To give students experience in the techniques for the manipulation and electrophoretic separation of proteins and DNA.

  12. Objectives • To provide information regarding biological, chemical, radiation, and other aspects of lab safety. Students will receive 4 hours of radiation safety training in order to achieve certification by the institutional Radiation Safety Officer for radiation work.
