  1. ART AND SCIENCE • OBJECTIVE: • Study of Application of Art in different subjects: • Mineral pigments and Romanesque Art pictures: painting with minerals. • Interaction of food colorant and milk (by learning properties of water: superficial tension, capillary and density).

Task 1: Mineral pigments and Romanesque Art pictures: painting with minerals This task is based on the Research Work of our School InstitutGuillem de Berguedà: FROM MINERAL TO ROMANESQUE ALTARPIECE by Sara Vima, that was awared in EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS). The work related art, science and nature and the author gave us the permission to use her studies in order to do an activity for our class.

  3. 1) Mineral collection LOCATION AND COLLECTION OF THE MINERALS IN THE BERGUEDÀ AREA The minerals used in Romanesque paintings, which can be found in Berguedà are: azurite, malachite, limonite, hematite, pyrolusite, gypsum and calcite. Jorney of geology. Walk following a map in some places of Berguedà where minerals were collected and classified into a collection with their identification “in visu”.   4. 2) Pigment preparation OBTAINING THE PIGMENT • Separating impurities from the minerals • Grinding the minerals with an agate mortar • Storage of pigments in plastic tubes

  5. 3) Surface preparation and paint making process • Preparation of wooden boards with rabbit skin glue and gypsum. • Paint making process: pigment + agglutinating agent. The decision was to use egg tempera technique , which uses egg yolk mixed with linseed oil and distilled water as agglutinating agent.

  9. Task 2: Interaction of food colorant and milk In this task the girls learnt the properties of water playing with colours.
