4. GPA/Test Scores GPA What is a “good” GPA? Will the University consider all my High School Courses? AP vs CP??? Community College/CSU/UC /Private School? Test Scores What is a “good” score? Do I need to take SAT prep classes to do well? What’s on the test? Which test should I take? How many times should I take the test/s?

5. SAT/ACT Test Dates • All CSU’s with the exception of Cal Poly SLO, San Jose State, and San Diego State accept the December test dates. • Cal Poly, SJSU, and SDSU accept the November SAT and October ACT, as the latest test students can take.

6. Course Rigor • What is Course Rigor? • How do I add rigor to my courses? -Keep in mind, the Universities want to accept students that have challenged themselves throughout High School! ‘They’ would rather you take an AP and get a ‘B’ than take a CP and get an ‘A!’

7. Community Service/Volunteer Work • Seriously…. Why do I need to do this? • The purpose of Community Service is to provide the student an opportunity to gain experiences

Additional Criteria Extracurricular activities -Sports, community service, and clubs Recommendations from teachers -Ask for a letter from two or three teachers that know you well Essays -A chance for the student to paint a more detailed picture -Write, revise, and get friends/family/teachers to edit them

Types of Colleges 4-year university California public universities UC system – 10 campuses – top 10% of students CSU system – 23 campuses – top 50% of students Out-of-state public universities Out-of-state tuition is higher than in-state (Oregon University, Arizona State, etc.) Private universities in all states tuition is the same for all students whether in or out-of-state Santa Clara, Stanford, USC, Harvard, Columbia, etc. Community College – 2 year degree Gavilan, DeAnza, San Jose City, etc. – 108 campuses – all students are eligible Students can complete 2 years at community college, then transfer to a 4-year university (must fulfill transfer requirements)

15. CSU Admissions • 102,000 new undergraduates enrolled in fall 2012 – 96% of new freshmen came from California high schools. • Student must have a 2.0 GPA or better. Calculate GPA using only “a-g” approved courses taken after the 9th grade. • Do not settle for a low GPA or Low SAT Score, CSU’s are very competitive. • Students should check with each campus of choice to determine if a more selective admissions criteria or a high eligibility index for admission at these campuses will be used. • CSU Mentor filing period - October1, 2013 - November 30, 2013. Do not wait until the last minute to apply. Massive activity can affect your student’s application being delayed per computer clichés. • The ACT or SAT Reasoning Test is required. One or both are accepted. Cal Poly prefers the ACT but will accept the SAT. • Students may combine the best Reading and Math scores from multiple sittings of the SAT. The SAT and ACT writing tests are not required.

ELM & EPT • The CSU requires that each entering undergraduate, except those who qualify for an exemption, take the CSU Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) examination and the CSU English Placement Test (EPT) prior to enrollment. These placement tests are not a condition for admission to the CSU, but they are a condition of enrollment. These examinations are designed to identify entering students who may need additional support in acquiring college entry-level English and mathematics skills necessary to succeed in CSU baccalaureate-level courses. • A student can test at any CSU, but be aware of the deadline at the school you are applying to.

Program/Major Impaction • Program Impaction: A campus receives more eligible applications for a specific undergraduate program in the initial filing period than there are enrollment spaces available. • Most campuses have at least one impacted major/program • Typically impacted at upper-division level • Students must meet criteria such as GPA in specific core/major prep courses, cumulative GPA, or a combination of factors
