  2. Spider Man Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Toxins- are substances created by plants and animals that are poisonous to humans. Toxins also include medications that are helpful in therapeutic doses but poisonous when used in an excess amount. Most toxins that cause problems in humans are released by microorganisms such as bacteria. Fictional effects of toxins: • Spiderman: radioactive spider bite. • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fell into a sewer along with a container of toxic materials.

  9. A Case Study: The Death of Heath Ledger Heath Andrew Ledger (4 April 1979 – 22 January 2008) was an Australian television and film actor. His Last Movie was the famous: Joker in The Dark KnightHe was killed by a deadly combination of FDA-approved medications prescribed to him by his doctors. The drugs found in Ledger's system were OxyContin (a painkiller), Valium, Xanax (an antidepressant), Restoril, Unisom and Vicodin. This toxicology report ends any speculation that Ledger might have been killed by taking recreational drugs. The cause of death is now clearly FDA-approved pharmaceuticals.

  10. Dead…but how?! • “Husbands or wives suddenly die and there is no physical injury or underlying health problems. Forensic toxicology has worked to uncover drugs in their systems that caused the death.”

  11. What Does the Future Hold? • Advancements in how tests for toxins in the bloodstream are expected to be researched and improved upon. The demand for testing procedures that are faster and more accurate is increasing at crime scenes. • Improvement in currently present technology (faster and automated • Cheaper methods • As new drugs come out and as people use newer drugs, the need for new methods of testing for the presence of those drugs will need to be developed. • Toxicologists must constantly keep up with new toxins/drugs discovered/invented. • Currently, Forensic toxicologists need to develop methods to help them differentiate between toxins that got into the body as cause of death or by forceful entry (a criminal overdosing someone) or through the environment (perhaps from the drinking polluted water).
