  1. The Magna Carta was a document written in 1215 that King John (of England) was forced into signing as it greatly reduced his power he held and allowed the formation of a parliament allowing the English the basis of civilian rights.

  2. The Magna Carta was written to make the King rule by the old English laws that were current in the time before the Normans came. The Magna Carta had 37 English laws, some from the past and some new ones. It showed that the King’s power could be limited by a written grant.

  3. The Magna Carta was drafted by Archbishop Stephen Langton and the most powerful Barons of England. King John signed the document (June 10, 1215) which was originally called the “Articles of the Barons” but the barons renewed the Oath of Fealty to the King 5 days later. The royal chancery created a formal royal grant based on the agreements reached at Runnymede, which then became known as the Magna Carta. Copies of this document were given to bishops, sheriffs and other important people in England.

  4. InterestingFacts: • The Magna Carta was actually signed in a meadow in Egham, Surrey, south England (between Windsor and Staines). • The charter is considered to be the beginning of constitutional government in England.

  5. The influence of the Magna Carta is seen in the “United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights”. Article 21 from the Declaration of Rights in the Maryland Constitution of 1776 says: "That no freeman ought to be taken, or imprisoned, or disseized of his freehold, liberties, or privileges, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any manner destroyed, or deprived of his life, liberty, or property, but by the judgment of his peers, or by the law of the land."

  6. Many things happened before the King was forced into signing the Magna Carta

  7. Taxes levied by King John were extortionate. His reprisals against defaulters were ruthless and his idea justice was considered avaricious (grasping) In 1212 King John imposes taxes on the Barons in his attempts to regain the lost lands of Aquitaine, Poitou and Anjou In 1205 King John quarrelled with the Pope Innocent III about who should be archbishop of Canterbury. The Pope wanted a man named Stephen Langton to be archbishop, but King John swore he should never come to England King John quarreled with the Barons over his methods of ruling England The Barons took up arms against King John In 1209 The pope retaliated, excommunicated King John and banned all church services in all parish churches In June the Barons, in full armour, took King John by surprise at Windsor and he agreed to a meeting at Runnymede King John gave in, and Pope Innocent made the king and people pay him money whenever he demanded it The Barons captured London in May 1215

  8. King John had no intention of agreeing with the Magna Carta. His fraud lead to the Barons War between 1215 - 1217. The rebel barons supported the son of the King of France, Prince Louis rather than King John.

  9. In 1216 Prince Louis invaded England and marched to London where he received support and was proclaimed and accepted as King of England even though he was not actually crowned. Louis VIII

  10. King John died in October and the Barons turned on Prince Louis and supported the nine year old son of King John who then became King Henry III of England.
