  4. A New Model of Leadership • “The leaders role is to establish the conditions under which all performers will choose to execute the mission, vision, and values of the organization.” • Leadership is the effect that any one person has on the behavior of others.

  5. The Model • Followers deliver behavior directed towards the leaders goals • Followers make sacrifices for the leaders cause • Followers tend to reinforce or correct each other to conform to the cause • Followers set guidelines for themselves based on their perception of the leaders expectations

  6. Leader? Or Great Leader? 1. Magnitude How many people felt their impact? 2. Duration of the impact Is it still being felt? 3. Number of followers How many people followed them?

  7. Building Loyalty – The Leader Shows the Way • Leaders show actions are valued Actions in line with the leaders vision are to be rewarded • Default: ignore good, punish bad Followers will resent this, and limit their exposure to the leader • The leaders style will be imitated at all levels

  8. The Opposite of Loyalty • Indifference to the vision of the leader, to the vision that makes the organization unique • Resistance to change Can be an issue for leaders when the change exposes the follower to punishment and failure, it will be resisted • Rewarding extra effort will lead to persistent and diligent followers

  9. Leader vs. Manager • A manager is a technician • Helps people and processes work together • Leaders are energizers • Encourage members to perform towards the vision • Norman Schwarzkopf: “[Purpose of leadership is] to get people to willingly do that which they ordinarily would not do”. • One can be a leader or a manager, or both.

  10. Measuring Leadership + Accomplishments • Outcome is only half of the picture. • Growth in the enterprise • Level of enterprise prominence • Positive legacy?
