What is HSAP? • An acronym: High School Assessment Program (South Carolina’s Exit Exam) • Purpose: To measure students’ academic achievement on high school standards in accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLBA); also to meet the requirements of the South Carolina Education Accountability Act of 1998 (EAA) • Components: Integrated ELA Reading & Writing (Days 1 & 2); Math (Day3) Testing Dates: October 19,20, and 21

  3. Who takes HSAP? • Students who meet the state HSAP participation guidelines unless they meet the state qualifications for alternate assessment. • Students who are new to South Carolina.

  4. What are the score ranges for each HSAP achievement level in ELA ? • Level 1: Below Basic (100-199) • Level 2: Basic; level needed for high school academic diploma (200-222) • Level 3: Proficient; level needed to meet AYP (223-240) • Level 4: Advanced (241-320) • Students must score at a level of 2 on a scale of 1 to 4 in ELA and math. • Students must meet standards in both ELA & Math to earn an academic diploma. • Standard ELA composite scores and math scores can be “banked.”

  5. When is HSAP given? • Initially given to students in the spring of the second year in high school • Subsequently given in the fall and in the spring of each year for students who failed to meet standards on the first attempt

What will students be expected to do on the ELA section? • Compare/contrast information from a variety of genres • Non-fiction: warranties, applications, editorials, newspaper & magazine articles, directions, memos, letters, essays, speeches, science & social studies articles, etc. • Fiction: poetry, short stories, excerpts from novels & plays, etc.

ELA student expectations continued…… • Reading: Answer objective questions on the following: • Author’s purpose, bias, propaganda, main idea, supporting details, arguments, conclusions, inference, predictions, summarizing, paraphrasing, tone, theme, structure, irony, mood, setting, plot, cause & effect, characterization, point of view, style, conflict, figurative language, (word study & analysis), syntax, diction, grammar (revising & editing), research (primary / secondary sources, accuracy/bias of sources, etc.

  9. ELA student expectations continued….. • Writing: Constructed Response • Compose two constructed responses based on reading passages provided • Format: (1) Use a transitional phrase. (2) Answer the question. (3) Explain 2-3 paraphrased or quoted examples from the text. (4) Go beyond the text, making a student connection.

ELA student expectationcontinued… • Writing: Extended Response • Compose one extended response • Format: 15 point rubric • Content: Elaboration of examples; (4 points) • Organization: 3 paragraphs; transitional words; logical progression of ideas; (4 points) • Voice: Strong verbs/adjectives/figurative language, elevated vocabulary, & sentence variety; (3 points) • Conventions: Standard spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word usage, verbs, etc.; (4 points)

ELA student expectationcontinued… • Writing • Complete multiple choice items on editing, revising, & appropriate grammar usage • Sentence combining, clarity, effective phrasing, modifiers, parallel structure, sentence variety, sentence structure, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, verb tense, word usage, subject/verb agreement, etc.

  12. What materials are students allowed to use when they take the ELA test? • The student will be allowed to use a dictionary, thesaurus, and scratch paper for the extended-response question only. The school will provide these materials, which will be collected at the end of the test. • Students should come prepared with two #2 sharpened pencils (no mechanical pencils).

  13. What will be assessed on the Mathematics test? • Mathematics Expectations are based on the South Carolina curriculum standards and provide information about what students need to know when they take the HSAP test.

  14. Mathematics Categories • Number and Operations • Algebra • Measurement and Geometry • Data Analysis and Probability • Process Standards (as assessed by Integrated-Response)

  15. Mathematics Expectations • Number and Operations--Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems. Compute with rational numbers and make reasonable estimates in applied situations. • Algebra--Understand and apply patterns, relations, and functions. Represent, analyze, and model situations using mathematical structures and algebraic symbols.

  16. Mathematics Expectations cont… • Measurement and Geometry--Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements and solve problems. Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes, understand geometric relationships, and apply spatial relationships using coordinate geometry.

Mathematics Expectations cont… • Data Analysis and Probability--Use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data and apply basic concepts of probability. • Process Standards (as assessed by Integrated-Response)--Use the process standards of problem solving, communication, representations, and connections to apply a solution strategy and communicate and represent the results.

  18. What types of items are on the mathematics test? • Multiple-Choice items with four options each will assess the content in Number and Operations, Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Data Analysis and Probability. • Integrated-Response items are designed to integrate the expectations of Number and Operations, Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Data Analysis and Probability. These questions will ask students to show their work and/or write an explanation to support their answers.

  19. What materials are students allowed to use when they take the mathematics test? • Each student will be given a reference sheet with formulas and a sheet of graph paper for scratch work along with the test booklet. • These materials will be collected at the end of the test.

  20. Can students use calculators during the mathematics test? • Students may use calculators during the mathematics test; however, the test questions can be solved without the use of a calculator.

  21. What can students do to be more successful on HSAP? • Focus on one question at a time during testing. • Read the directions and questions carefully. • Try to answer all questions. You will not be penalized for guessing. • Skip a question if you don’t know the answer. Come back to the question(s) after you finish the rest of the test. • Realize that easier and more difficult questions are scattered throughout the test. Do not be discouraged if you find some of the first questions on the test to be difficult. • Go back and check your answers when you finish.
