  3. Some great causesome great decisionOff’ring each the bloom or blight

  4. And the choice goes by forever’Twixt that darkness and that light

  5. Then to side with truth is nobleWhen we share her wretched crustEre her cause bring fame and profitAnd ’tis prosperous to be just

  6. Then it is the brave man choosesWhile the coward stands aside

  7. Till the multitude make virtueOf the faith they had denied

  8. By the light of burning martyrsChrist, Thy bleeding feet we trackToiling up new Calv’ries everWith the cross that turns not back

  9. New occasions teach new dutiesAncient values test our youth

  10. They must upward still and onwardWho would keep abreast of truth

  11. Tho’ the cause of evil prosperYet the truth alone is strongTho’ her portion be the scaffoldAnd upon the throne be wrong

  12. Yet the scaffold sways the futureAnd, behind the dim unknown

  13. Standeth God within the shadowKeeping watch above His own
