The Council of Trent • Response of Church to Luther • Called by Pope Paul III • He saw a need to deal with corrupt bishops, indulgences and Church finances • Political appts of bishops eliminated • Bishops of Church met to reexamine • Catholic beliefs and traditions • New way to speak of them • Belief in 7 Sacraments esp presence of Jesus in Eucharist • Mass – Christ’s saving work • Confirmed which books of Bible Catholics recognized

  4. Pope Paul IV; • Determined to eliminate Protestantism • Excessive: tortured and burned heretics

  5. Pope Paul V: • Increased: piety and devotion Pope Sixtus V rebuilt Rome to symbolize the centrality of the Church (united)

  6. Closer look at the Council of Trent • Defended Mass and Eucharist • Sacraments signs instituted by Jesus • Sacraments we received grace • Established seminaries to train priests • Ended indulgence abuse • Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition are one with God’s word.

  7. Following the Council of Trent • New religious orders were formed: • Ursulines • Jesuits • Capuchins • result of these : • Curbed corruption in Church • Created new spiritual movements to reform people.

  8. A Teacher • St. Charles Borromeo • Restored liturgy • Made sure poor and sick were cared for • Wrote catechism of our faith (official until 1992) • Parish priest made responsible for education of young • Established seminaries to teach priests

  9. A Mystic • St Theresa of Jesus • Born in Avila, Spain • Age 20 became Carmelite sister • Reformed Carmelites • Serving god meant; • Prayer • Commitment • Sacrifice • courage

Devoted life to prayer and penance • Granted a direct union with God (mystic) • People who through visions, deep insights, and ecstatic experiences encountered God in an intense way and shared the experience with others. • Doctor of the Church along with Katherine of Siena • Title given to saints who excel in guiding the Church

Martyrs for Truth • St. Thomas More, • Catholic layman • Defended Catholic Church to Henry VIII • Refused to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the Church in England • Imprisoned in Tower of London • Beheaded • “Don’t be afraid for you send me to God.” • “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.”

  16. St. Peter Claver - Jesuit - brought relief to Africans enslaved in S. America - Knew morally slavery was wrong - rush to a slave ship to give slaves medicine, fruit, vegetables and God - to give dignity

  19. Vocal prayer – invites us to express our interior prayer externally • Good in groups • Meditative prayer – deeper understanding of our faith aided by icons, texts, Scripture • Contemplative Prayer - a silent resting in the presence of the Lord

Sorrow – asking forgiveness • 5. Hopefulness: Resolving to Grow • Trust in His guidance • Resolve to cooperate • 6. End with the Our Father
