What is Increased Learning Time? What research and Politicians are saying…
“Learning in America is a prisoner of time. For the past 150 years, American public schools have held time constant and let the learning vary. The rule, only rarely voiced, is simple: learn what you can in the time we make available. It should surprise no one that some bright, hard-working students do reasonably well. Everyone else – from the typical student to the dropout – runs into trouble.” National Education Commission on Time and Learning - 1994
Schedules around the world. Instructional Hours per Week
“We can no longer afford an academic calendar designed for when America was a nation of farmers who needed their children at home plowing the land at the end of each day....The challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.” - President Barak Obama
“I think the school day is too short, the school week is too short, and the school year is too short…” - Arne Duncan

4 Types of Time Allocated School Time
What is Increased Learning Time? • “Aimed at high-poverty, underperforming schools, expanded learning is the lengthening of the school day by at least 30 percent – the equivalent of roughly two hours per day or 360 hours per year. To be effective, the concept of expanded learning requires the complete redesign of a school’s educational program in a way that combines academics with enrichment for a well-rounded student experience and that supports teachers by giving them more time for planning, training, and professional development.” • Center for American Progress
