CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint During this tutorial you will learn how to create an interactive tutorial using PowerPoint. 1. You will learn where to find the template to build the tutorials. 2. You will learn how to link the menu items. 3. You will learn how to animate and record voice for the tutorial.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint In order to create your tutorial, you must first open the PowerPoint template which is located on NSU “I” drive in the brownez folder. The template is essentially a shell which will enable you to create your tutorial within CLIP standards.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint The first slide in the template is dedicated to the title and credits of the tutorial. Here you will enter the title of the tutorial in the appropriate spots, as well as add author, institution, and date information.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint The second thing you must do is to name the title of each slide within the tutorial within the table of contents. This will aid in navigation throughout the tutorial. Remember that the table of contents must be replicated throughout the tutorial. Hyperlink the table of contents first, and then copy and paste to save yourself a ton of time.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Per CLIP procedure, it is necessary to make sure that the table of contents is linked to all other slides of the tutorial. This is a time consuming process, but can be accomplished rather simply. First, highlight the text that you would like to link. Select the Insert menu, and then choose insert hyperlink. Remember to link before you copy, so that you don’t have to repeat this for every slide.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Once you have selected insert hyperlink, a window will pop up. You will need to choose “place in this document.” Each slide will appear under the “Slide Titles” menu. You will need to pick the appropriate slide number to link to. For example, slide number one will be linked to 1. CLIP, and so forth. Once the correct slide has been selected, simply hit “Ok.” The slide will be linked.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint In order to copy a slide for the duration of the tutorial, simply click on the slide in the left hand menu and press Ctrl + C. You could also click on the slide, choose the edit menu, and select copy. To paste the slide, simply press Ctrl + V, or choose the edit menu and select paste.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint The second slide is dedicated to stating the tutorials learning objectives. These include what you intend your audience to learn from the tutorial. Please list any learning objectives you feel are appropriate.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Let's begin! Now that you have filled out the title slide, the table of contents, and the learning objectives, you can begin to write your tutorial. For the remainder of this tutorial you will learn some of the tricks and neat things associated with PowerPoint.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint For most tutorials screen captures are a must. In order to capture the screen you are trying to input into your tutorial, press Ctrl + Print Screen. Once you have done that, click on the slide you would like the screen capture to appear in, and press Ctrl + V, or paste. The screen capture will take up the entire screen, so be sure to click once on the picture and then select the “crop” tool from the menu bar. You will be able to crop the photo so it better fits your slide.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint If you have specific information on the screen you would like to highlight, PowerPoint offers a variety of animation options. Choose the item you wish to animate, and then choose the “Slide Show” menu. In this menu you will find and option for “custom animation.” A right side bar will pop up, and you will choose to “Add effect.” The effect you choose is entirely up to you, so feel free to explore your options.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Words can have effects added to them as well. If you have a heading you would like to highlight, you can choose the Insert Menu, and then select “Picture.” Once you have done this, select “Word Art,” and type in the word or phrase you desire. If you wish to add an effect, simply follow the aforementioned directions and create your own animation.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint 3 2 1 5 6 4 You can also time you effects so that they flow in a fashion you desire.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Voice Recording Since speaking the text is very important to the CLIP project, the next thing you will learn will be how to insert voice into your tutorial. This will require that you have a microphone or headset at your disposal in order to record your dialog.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint To begin your voice recording session, select the “Slide Show” menu, and choose “Record Narration.”
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint The first thing you will want to do is set the microphone level. This will ensure smooth sound throughout the tutorial. Once you are satisfied with the microphone level, press “Ok” to begin recording.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint You will have the choice as to what slide you would like to begin narration from. The narration will record from the slide you choose, continuously, once you click. Once you choose a slide to start from, PowerPoint will open as if in a slide show. Simply read the text on the screen, and click when you would like to move to the next scene. TIP: You should wait three seconds before you begin, and after you finish talking on each slide.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint If you make a mistake while recording, select “End Slide Show” at the bottom left of the screen.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Once you have opted to stop the recording- make sure that you SAVE what you have done. PowerPoint will take you to a screen and allow you to choose which slide you would like to begin recording from. Each slide narration is attached to a single slide, so you don’t have to start from the beginning every time. Select which slide you would like to start from and go from there.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Tips and Suggestions One of the last things you should consider doing before you finish your tutorial is make sure that each slide title is in BOLD when the current slide is playing. This will help the reader understand where they are in the tutorial. Also, try to keep your tutorial to 22 slides, and this includes the three slides for the introduction, the learning objectives, and the conclusion. If your tutorial is more, consider another medium.
CLIP Cooperative Library Instruction Project How to write a tutorial in PowerPoint Try it yourself! Thus concludes the tutorial on building a tutorial. You should now know how to link, animate, and record narration. If you have any questions, worries, or remarks, please feel free to contact the authors of this demonstration.
