  2. Did you Know? • Teachers should know the most distinguished American Children’s Books. • Teachers should have these books in their class library, read, and discuss them with their students.

Coretta Scott King Book Awards • This award is given to the African American authors and illustrators for inspirational and educational contributions, the Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society

Did you Know? • Teachers should know the most distinguished American Children’s Books. • Teachers should have these books in their class library, read, and discuss them with their students. • My class library contains Literacy/ recreational reading materials re generally read for pleasure, such as Magazine articles, poetry, novels, and short stories. • My class library contains Informational/textual reading materials are generally read for information, such as Materials containing charts or graphs and materials found in encyclopedias, textbooks, Lab manuals, essays, and news magazines. • My class library contains Functional reading materials that are generally read for a precise action, such as directions, maps, schedules, menus, catalogues, instructions, and other materials generally encountered in everyday life beyond the classroom. • I believe that the children books that have won most awards should fill my class library shelves, too. • I think that children develop a love for reading if there is a combination of literary/recreational, informational, textual, and functional reading materials in a classroom. The John Newbery Medal • The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year. • On June 22, 1921, Frederic G. Melcher proposed the award to the American Library Association meeting of the children’s Librarians’ Section and suggested that it be named for the eighteenth-century English bookseller John Newbery. • www.bookweb.org/btw/awards/Newbury.html.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal • Each year the Newbery Medal is awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children’s books published the previous year. • However, many people became concerned that the artists creating picture books for children were as deserving of honor and encouragement as were the authors of children’s books, Frederic G. Melcher suggested in 1937 the establishment of a second annual medal. This medal is given to the artist who had created the most distinguished picture book of the year and named in honor of the nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph J. Calecott.

  10. Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards • These awards have been given annually in the fall every since 1967 by the Boston Globe and The Horn Book Magazine. These books are awarded for outstanding Fiction or Poetry. Also, Outstanding Nonfiction, and Outstanding Illustration. • Non-Americans can write and publish, but they must be written in the United States of America • Lukens, R. T., (2007)

  11. Highlights Magazines • Highlights for Children (referred as simply Highlights) is an American children's magazine. It began publication in June 1946, started by Garry Cleveland Myers and his wife in Honesdale, Pennsylvania (the present location of its editorial office). They both worked for another children's magazine, Children's Activities, for 12 years before leaving to start Highlights. The company is presently based in Columbus, Ohio. Highlights has surpassed a billion copies in print.

Market Wire (USA)-February 27, 2007 • This article discussed, The Cat in the Hat Turns 50! • The article new article stated that on March1, Dr. Seuss’ beloved classic The Cat in the Hat celebrated its 50th Birthday. This was originally published by Random House in 1957, The Cat in the Hat was embraced widely and enthusiastically, becoming an instant bestseller and turning Dr. Seuss into a household name virtually overnight. • http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives

  13. The Robert F. Sibert Medal • The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author (s) and illustrator (S) of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year. • The award is named in honor of Robert f. Sibert, the long-time President of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. of Jacksonville, Illinois. ALSC administers the award.

The Schneider Family Book Award • The Schneider Family Book Awards honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences. Three annual awards each consisting of $5000 and a framed plaque, will be given annually in each of the following categories: • Birth through grade school, middle school, and teens. (Age groupings are approximations).

  15. The Carnegie Medal • The Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video, supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, was awarded for the first time in 1991 to honor outstanding video productions for children released during the previous year. • The annual award is given to the video’s producer by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, through a Carnegie endowment.

  16. YALSA’s Alex Awards • The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.

  18. Printz Award • The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for outstanding books that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. • 2009 Winner: Jellicoe Road • by Melina Marchetta • 2008 Winner: The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean • 2007 Winner: American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

  19. Laura Ingalls Wilder Award • This Award was first given in 1954. • The award, a bronze medal, honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the united States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.

  20. Geisel Award • The Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.

  21. Honor Books • Honor Books 2010 Geisel Award (Theodor Seuss) • I spy Fly Guy, written and illustrated by Tedd Arnold, published by Scholastic, Inc. • Little Mouse Gets Ready, written and illustrated by Jeff Smith, and published by, TOON BOOKS, a Division of RAW Junior, LLC.

  22. Margaret A. Edwards Award • The Margaret A. Edwards Award, established in 1988, honors an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature.
