  3. Vocabulary Words • Synonyms- • words with similar meanings • example: • happy, glad, joyful

  4. hamper • to hinder or prevent the progress of • Example: Rain will hamper our plans to have a picnic.

  5. impulsive • given to acting without thinking first • Example: The impulsive boy spoke without thinking.

  6. optimism • belief that good things happen • Example: Optimism makes you believe you can do it.

  7. accomplice • one who helps or assists with something • Example: I won’t help or be an accomplice to a crime.

  8. dispense • to distribute something • give out • Example: Vending machines dispense candy when paid.

  9. mustache • facial hair that is above the lip • Example: The hair above his lip is called a mustache.

  10. literal • taken or mean word for word • as is • Example: My words are literal: I’m not exaggerating.

  11. criminal • one who breaks the law • Example: The criminal was caught with stolen merchandise in her pocket.

  12. enhance • make better; intensify; or improve • Example: Spices will enhance and improve the flavor of the beef.

  13. anonymous- • nameless or unnamed: having an unknown source • not known by name or author • Example: • The anonymous donor gave ten thousand dollars to the charity event.

  14. hysteria- • uncontrollable excitement or emotion; a mental disorder in which physical symptoms as extreme as blindness or partial paralysis can occur without a physical cause • Example: • There was hysteria among the crowd.

  15. tranquility- • the quality or condition of being serene or calm • state of serenity • Example: • There was a feeling of tranquility near the goldfish pond.

  16. wholesome- • being conducive to sound health or well-being; sound • healthy; promoting good habits • Example: • The family meal provided was wholesome and nourishing.

  17. woe- • deep distress or misery, as from grief; a misfortune or difficulty • Example: • The victims of war suffer much woe even after they are safe.

  18. valid- • well grounded; just; having legal force • something true, legitimate • Example: • The report was valid and provided many details.

  19. lurch- • to move suddenly and unsteadily; stagger; to roll or pitch suddenly or unsteadily • Example: • The wagon gave a sudden lurch forward when the horse was startled.

  20. awed- • to fill with a feeling of wonder, fear, and respect inspired by something mighty or majestic • caused great amazement, respect, or dread • Example: • The crowd was awed by the meteor shower.

  21. humility- • the quality or condition of being modest or humble • meekness • Example: • He showed great humility as he received several awards.

  22. perish- • to die • be destroyed or ruined • Example: • If the plane should crash, all aboard will perish.
