  3. Vocabulary Words • Synonyms- • words with similar meanings • example: • woe, despair, agony

  4. sustain • to keep or support • Example: • His encouragement helped sustain her spirits.

  5. overblown • unusually large; overdone or exaggerated • Example • How did this trivial matter get overblown?

  6. encroach • advance beyond proper limits • Example: • My neighbor’s bushes will encroach on my yard.

  7. feasible • able to be accomplished, practical • Example: • An attainable goal is a feasible goal.

  8. mutually • reciprocally or equally • Example: • They mutually agreed on a fair price.

  9. disagreeable • unpleasant or unenjoyable • Example: • The disagreeable odor was very unpleasant.

  10. butte • isolated hill with steep sides and a flat top • Example: • The steep butte stood alone in the desert.

  11. dehydrated • lacking water or moisture • Example: • I was dehydrated and needed water to drink.

  12. euphonium • brass instrument resembling a tuba • Example: • A euphonium looks like a tuba.

  13. gyrate • to move in a circle around a fixed point • Example: • I gyrate the hula hoop on my hips.

  14. alliance • a bond or connection between people, nations, or other groups • an association formed for mutual benefit • Example: • The alliance helped them win the war against crime in their neighborhood.

  15. alternative • one of two or more things that can be selected; a choice or option • another option, usually one of two • Example: • The alternative was worse than the initial punishment.

  16. commence • to begin, to start • Example: • We shall commence at 9:00 a.m.

  17. indifference • having no preference in the matter • lack of concern or interest • Example: • Her indifference was reflected in her lack of vote for the choice of class president.

  18. meager • falling short of what is needed; lacking richness • lacking or small in quantity or quality • Example: • His meager salary did not allow the family to have luxuries.

  19. portray • to make a picture or description of • to appear as or make something out to be as • Example: • The movie will portray the banker as a thief.

  20. simultaneous • happening, or occurring at the same time • Example: • The cans of soda had a simultaneous explosion due to the heat trapped in the trunk of the car.

  21. taunt • to insult or make fun of; to ridicule, challenge in an insulting manner • to insult by mockery or criticism • Example: • The bully liked to taunt his victims.

  22. urban • of, relating to, or located within a city • Example: • The urban neighborhood had a public library nearby.

  23. varied • differing in some way; diverse • went through a change or transformation • Example: • Her choice of clothing varied from day to day.
