  1. CROSSING THE SHOCK: illuminating the ejecta of Cas AL. Rudnick, Univ. of Minnesota E13-0024-0813 July, 1820h, 515B

  2. The work of many hands… SPITZER T. DeLaney, MIT J. Ennis, U MN T. Kozasa, Hokkaido H. Morgan, Cardiff W. Reach, Spitzer J. Rho, Spitzer J.D. Smith, U. Ohio K. Isensee, U MN RADIO, X-RAY, OPTICAL R. Petre, U. Hwang, GSFC R. Fesen (Dartmouth) J. Bowden (Colorado Coll.) N. Kassim (Naval RL) Funding: NASA (Chandra/HST/Spitzer) and NSF (radio)

  3. Messages to take home • • The ONLY ejecta which have been seen in Cas A (optical, IR, X-ray, radio) are those that have just crossed the reverse shock • The explosion of the inner layers was flattened. with multiple “jets”  different nucleosynthesis layers are now visible in each direction. ● Much of the ejecta is still in the interior, waiting to encounter the reverse shock. •

  4. The Explosion - structure

  5. Multiple temperature overlapping plasmas 104K relativistic 107K 102K

  6. Explosion paradox - optical, X-ray, radio

  7. New view of the explosion

  8. Bits of wisdom • The motion of material is different than the motion of the shock – • Ejecta become visible as they encounter the reverse shock

  9. Illuminating the nucleosynthesis layers

  10. Illuminating the nucleosynthesis layers Circumstellar H,He burn Small C grains, PAH? O-burning Si, Ar, S + dust: SiO2, FeO, MgSiO3 C-burning: Ne, O + dust: Al2O3

  11. Explosion in 3DDoppler motions

  12. The Explosion in 3-D

  13. More to come? Si XIV Si II

  14. Si XIII Si XIV
