  1. SCIENCE 6TH GRADE MRS. MARITES L. DE LUNA October 14-17 , 2013 Wave Properties Sound Waves

  2. Quick questions : Monday • 1. The peak of the wave is called _________. • 2. The lowest part of the wave is called __________. • 3. The distance from crest to crest is called __________. • 4. The magnitude, height or the strength of the wave is its __________. • 5. Light waves are transverse waves. (T/F)

  3. Goals : 6.P.1.1 & 6.P.1.3 (Essential Standard) • By the end of the week, I can : • 1. tell what causes sounds or how are sounds produced • 2. tell what a medium is • 3. state how sound waves are affected by the mediums through which they travel • 4. compare and contrast pitch from loudness • 5. identify some structure of the human ear and its connection to our brain

  4. HOMEWORK (WEEK OF October 14-17, 2013) • 1. Instrument Making Project • October 22, 2013 (Deadline)

  5. Vocabulary word : Monday • Sound –Is the transfer of energy from a vibrating object in waves that travel through matter. • Sentence. All sounds begin with vibrating matter. • Your turn!

  6. INTERESTING IDEA • SCIENCE MAGIC/TRICK

  7. Sound Links (discovery ed & ck text) • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/464cfbc6-375a-4d89-837f-3079b653e6c9 • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/1a5cf3c0-5b3f-4866-8651-e294add8d23c • http://www.ck12.org/book/CK-12-Physical-Science-For-Middle-School/r1/section/19.0/

  8. NEW CONCEPT : Monday • Something can be "heard" when sound waves from it enter the ear. Sound is a form of energy that is caused when vibrating materials produce waves that move through matter. The waves have different characteristics such as frequency and amplitude, which will determine the properties os sound such as pitch and loudness.

  9. New Concept : Tuesday - Thursday • http://www.ck12.org/book/CK-12-Physical-Science-For-Middle-School/r5/section/20.1/

  10. Longitudinal and transverse waves • http://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/demos/waves/wavemotion.html

  11. Vocabulary Word : Tuesday • Medium – a substance where sound waves can travel. It may be in a solid, liquid or gas/air. • Sentence . Of the three mediums (gas, liquid, and solid), sound waves travel the slowest through gases, and fastest through solids.

  12. Vocabulary Word : Wednesday • Pitch - How high or low a sound seems to a listener is its pitch. • Sentence. Her high-pitched voice made her song unbearable! • Your turn!

  13. Vocabulary Word : Thursday • Loudness - refers to how loud or soft a sound seems to a listener. The loudness of sound is determined, in turn, by the intensity of sound. • Sentence. The loudness of the music made everyone leave the auditorium! • Your turn~

  14. LEARNING CENTERS • 1 – Virtual Lab on Sound • 2 & 3 – Telephone Station • 4 – Pitch of a Sound (Glass with water station) • 5 - Sound Waves • 6 – Rock me with your bottle station • 7 – Wave Notes • Students, make sure that by Thursday, you have visited all learning centers.

  15. EXPECTATIONS FOR LEARNING CENTERS • All groups should work cooperatively and harmoniously with each other. • Each member of the group should contribute to the assigned project/experiment. • Answer all analysis questions at the back of the paper • MAKE SURE THAT YOUR GROUP will work AS QUIETLY as possible. You are allowed to communicate but lower your tone so as not to disturb others. • No group hopping. Just stay with your group!

  16. ACTUAL LAB PERFORMANCE

  17. POST LAB DISCUSSION • DISCUSS AND SHARE VARIOUS GROUP RESULTS • ANSWER THE ANALYSIS QUESTIONS

  18. Recording data (Mondays) • Test scores will be distributed. • Test scores will be recorded by both teacher and students. • Students will use a data sheet that will be given by the teacher to track their scores on every test, homework, classwork, laboratory work submitted in class. • Students will learn how to track down their progress in the Science class.

  19. Back Page of Data Sheet ( Line Graph • Example : • S • C • O • R • E • S (y-axis) test # (x-axis)

  20. INCREASING SCIENCE LITERACY • READING PASSAGE

  21. MSL QUESTION : COMMON EXAM – Monday • Which is one way sound waves are different from light waves? • A. Sound waves travel through space but light waves cannot. • B. Sound waves travel at a slower speed than light waves. • C. Sound waves have shorter wavelengths than light waves. • D. Sound waves are a source of energy but light waves are not.

  22. For More MSL Questions • http://maritesdelunascienceclass.weebly.com/uploads/2/2/7/3/22732006/common-exam_released_form_msl_6th_grade.pdf

  23. Summary • Exit ticket out • Questions? • One-sentence response • Complete the sentence • Think, pair, share!
