Asian American and Culture. Definition of Asian American. Refers to those who are living in the United States and having origins of any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia and Indian. By 2000, 3.6% of the US population, approximately 10 million, were Asian American.

  2. Definition of Asian American Refers to those who are living in the United States and having origins of any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia and Indian. By 2000, 3.6% of the US population, approximately 10 million, were Asian American.

  4. Diversity of Asian Americans • Asian American are very diverse: • Countries of origin & Ethnicities • Languages/dialects • Immigration History • Length/Generation of being in the United States • Socioeconomic status • Religious • Acculturation

  5. Origins from Asian Americans • 51% of Asian American are immigrants • The six largest groups, account for 89% of Asian American: • Chinese (2.7 million), • Filipinos (2.4 million), • Asian Indian (1.9 million) • Korean (1.23 million) • Vietnamese (1.22 million) • Japanese (1.15million)

Immigrant History • As 51% of Asian American are immigrants • Reasons include: • for most of Chinese, Indians, Japanese, • Filipinos and Koreans, arrive as middle-class immigrants to • join their families • invest in the U.S. economy • Southeast Asian origins, such as Vietnamese, Cambodian, or Laotians • escape war and persecution as refugees

  7. Asian American Culture Religious – Buddhism, Hinduism, Muslim, Catholicism, Christian, Daoism and many others. Language – different dialects even within one country or one region.
