  1. Unit 1: Matter and Change Chemistry BHS 2013-2013 Ms. Jensen

  2. Matter • Notes Pages 1-2

  3. Building Blocks of Matter • Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass

  4. Building Blocks of Matter • Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass • Mass – Measure of amount of matter • Measured in grams, g

  5. Weight v. Mass

  6. Building Blocks of Matter • Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass • Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) • Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element • Comes from Greek “átomos”, which means “uncuttable” or “the smallest indivisible particle of matter” • Was coined in 450 BCE by Democritus

  7. Atoms

  8. Building Blocks of Matter • Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass • Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) • Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element • Element – Pure substance with only one type of atom • Cannot be separated into a simpler substance

  9. ATOM of Gold (Au)

  10. Atoms of Gold (Au)

  11. Elemental Gold

  12. Bullion: Pure substance (gold) with only one type of atom

  13. Building Blocks of Matter • Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass • Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) • Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element • Element – Pure substance with only one type of atom • Compound – Pure substance, atoms of two or more elements are chemically bonded

  14. Compounds • Water, H2O, contains two elements: • Oxygen and Hydrogen • Caffeine, C8H10N4O2, contains four elements: • Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen

  15. Building Blocks of Matter • Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass • Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) • Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element • Element – Pure substance with only one type of atom • Compound – Pure substance, atoms of two or more elements are chemically bonded • Mixture – A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically bonded

  16. Mixtures • Heterogeneous Mixture: • Components that make up the mixture are not uniform • Rocks, oil and water, soup, pizza • Homogenous Mixture: • Components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout • Air, sugar water

  17. Can you identify the following? You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element, compound, or mixture. Review: • An element contains just one type of atom. • A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. • A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. • A mixture can contain both elements and compounds.
