Distributive Property. To distribute means t o deliver or pass out. Just like the teacher distributed the apples to the children , . we will distribute the factor to the terms inside the parenthesis. (5x – 8y + 3). -1 . (5x) (-8y) (+ 3). -1. -1. + 8y. - 3. -5x.

  2. Just like the teacher distributed the apples to the children, we will distribute the factor to the terms inside the parenthesis. (5x – 8y + 3) -1 (5x) (-8y) (+ 3) -1 -1 + 8y - 3 -5x Ta da!

  3. Sometimes, the factor will not have a number. Instead, there will just be a negative sign. Like this. (-8a + 6b - 2) - Don’t be afraid! A plain negative sign (-) is the same as -1. Do the same thing. (-8a) (+6b) (-2) - - - 6b + 2 8a Ta da!

  4. Now, let’s try distributive property with negative integers. -4 (-2x - 4y + 5) (-2x) (-4y) (+ 5) -4 -4 + 16y - 20 8x Ta da!
