  13. Continued • Religion can shape ideology and values. • A person can be attached to a faith and it Social or Religions implication. • A person may live by a “Spiritual” code. • It may provide a moral system for people.

  14. Some fight religion • People often fight for Separation of church and state. • Karl Marx felt that religion made people comfortable so that they would not argue against the oppressing class. • “the opiate of the masses”

  15. The Chimney SweeperWilliam Blake • When my mother died I was very young,And my father sold me while yet my tongue,Could scarcely cry weep weep weep weep,So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep.Theres little Tom Dacre, who cried when his headThat curled like a lambs back was shav'd, so I said.Hush Tom never mind it, for when your head's bare,You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hairAnd so he was quiet. & that very night. As Tom was a sleeping he had such a sightThat thousands of sweepers Dick, Joe, Ned, & JackWere all of them lock'd up in coffins of black,And by came an Angel who had a bright keyAnd he open'd the coffins & set them all free. Then down a green plain leaping laughing they runAnd wash in a river and shine in the Sun.Then naked & white, all their bags left behind. They rise upon clouds, and sport in the wind. And the Angel told Tom, if he'd be a good boy,He'd have God for his father & never want joy.And so Tom awoke and we rose in the darkAnd got with our bags & our brushes to work.Tho' the morning was cold, Tom was happy & warmSo if all do their duty, they need not fear harm.

  16. Churches • The largest and most opulent building in more European towns. • Meant to cause awe and reverence for the power of the church. • Mandated and dictated all aspects of your everyday life.

  17. Gender • How people see Gender is affected by their experiences and what society says about Gender. • People may follow tradition or non-traditional roles. (what are these?) • To address the disparity of this relationship, some cultures have developed Feminism. • Feminism: the organized struggle for the equality of women.

  18. Media • Media is…?

  19. Media • Tools for passing along information in society. • We have just discussed many types of media. • The Media has a strong influence on how we see ourselves and the world around us.

  20. How can the media alter how we see the world? (more important, how we see ourselves!)

  21. Media • As new media emerged in the 10th century, many thinkers asked what the effect would be on people. • As Media Conglomerates become more powerful is all different forms of media its is easier to become influenced. • Some feared this would lead to Hegemony as small groups developed to ability to take control the information of the majority.

  22. From what you’ve seen(Discussion) • 1. Are their any media outlets that are non-bias? • 2. How much information do you think media has the opinion of the public? • 3. Can you think of direct influence the media has had on you or your peers?

  23. Ideologies Change • Old ideas change a alter our ideologies. • As philosophers make new developments and predictions. • As scientist make new discoveries. • Even political leaders alter how we see the world.

  24. Examples

  25. Still changing

  26. The Milky Way

  27. Balancing Beliefs and Values • An individuals beliefs and values may contend with those around him/her. • Like we said, it is a gray area that includes both individualist and collectivist ideas.

  28. Quote of the Day • “An Individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” -Martin Luther King

  29. Well, This is where we start today! So far, we’ve talked about the Ideas of Individualism and Collectivism. We’ve talked about Individual Identity and Collective Identity. We’ve talked about the elements that influence you and help develop your own ideological Spectrum. (and how perspectives can develop) Finally we’ve talked about what an ideology is and the questions that they attempt to answer.

  30. Quick Reality Check • How is it going? • Do you see the connection with Identity and the formation of Ideology? • These first classes, however abstract, have been formalized to offer introspection.

  31. Introspection • the self-observation and reporting of conscious inner thoughts, desires and sensations. • It is a conscious mental and usually purposive process relying on thinking, reasoning, and examining one's own thoughts. • I don’t thinks its fare to judge others until we examine ourselves.

  32. Housekeeping • We will have no words today. • Remember that you will have a quiz tomorrow. • Do not stress, I suspect that you all will get a good grade! 

  33. Characteristics of Ideologies What were the questions that an Ideology tried to answer? Come on… think back…

  34. Okay, I’ll tell you • What are humans like, why do they act the way they do? (Human Nature) • How Should Society be Organized? (Structure of Society) • How has the world worked? (Interpretations of History) • How should the world Work? (visions for the future)

  35. Nature of Human Beings • Are people generally good or bad? • Do you trust people you do not know or have to have that trust earned? • This will be individual and not the same in all situations.

  36. History if full of both good & bad • But, sometimes it’s easy to focus on the Bad and get discourages. • I like to think back to a good philosophical friend when I can downtrodden in my quest for humanity.

  37. I think this is very true, how about you? “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become filthy.” -Gandhi

  38. Let’s look at page 11 I wonder how each of you see Human Nature?

  39. So, tell me… Are People Generally good with a few bad seeds? Or… are we a pile of dung with a few flowers fighting to the surface?

  40. Structure of Society Society can be broken down in to 3 sections: Informal Social Structures. Economic Structures of Society. Political Structures of Society.

  41. Informal Social Structures • Unwritten rules that are understood by people who live in a society. • These change in many Societies. • These also change over time.

  42. What are some of these?

  43. Economic Structures • How we make our money and spend our money can tell a great deal about society. • Capitalist believe in the Free Market and that wages should be based on Supply and Demand. • People work hard because it results in more profit.

  44. Economic Structures • Communist believe that all citizens are provided for. • Resources should be spread evenly across the population. • People work hard because they want no one to suffer and to be provided for.

  45. Political Structures of Society

  46. Interpretations of History History is the story of how we got to where we are and what the world was like in the past. Two people watching the same event will give two different stories. Also, people interpret the past differently.

  47. Napoleon said this! History is a set of lies agreed upon.

  48. Let’s talk about this:Have you ever felt Nostalgic?
