Trending in Schools…… Tending in MI Schools: • Teacher longevity is no longer protected. • Teachers are evaluated on Performance & Merit. • Focus on Student Learning • Focus on Teacher Performance As a result, School Districts: • accept fewer student teachers • have high expectations for student teachers • have a low tolerance for underperforming student teachers

Being an Excellent Student Teacher What does that mean for you? • You have to be excellent! • Diligent – act and get things done well • Proactive – act well in advance of due dates • Professional – work is free of errors, you dress, talk, look, act like a teacher. • Knowledgeable – you know your content areas • Skilled & Experienced– you prove your ability to engage with students and demonstrate how to apply diverse instructional practices and assessment strategies, and classroom management. • Student & Result Oriented – teaching is about students’ learning. - Guest Teacher – you know your place…as a guest and learner.

Overview of Student Teaching Student Teaching is: • Your time to shine! • Perfect and Refine your Skills • Shine & Perform as a Teacher Student Teaching is not: • An opportunity for you to work on developing skills, abilities, content knowledge and essential performance indicators required of successful teachers

Successful Student Teachers Characteristics of Successful Student Teachers: • High GPA (3.3 or higher) • Prepared for their Career • Have way more than 120 hours of field experience work. • Have spent considerable time engaged with children outside of college course requirements (substitute teaching, tutoring, teaching /working with children - camps, Sunday School, VBS, etc.). • Know the content knowledge of their subject and specialty areas. • Are innovative, creative, caring, and energetic. • Possess intuitive teaching skills (the teacher-in-you). • Think and act like a teacher. • Diligent & Hard Working • Seek Feedback for Improvement/Are Learners • Do Extra & Make Themselves Available @ Their School

Qualifications for Student Teaching • Admitted to SOE • Completion of 120 Field Experience Hours • Satisfactory completion of all program course work (no grades below C). • Have addressed all negative dispositions satisfactorily. • GPA • 2.7 Cum. • 2.7 Major and/or Minor Areas • Pass MTTC • Elementary : Elementary MTTC • Secondary: Content area (Major) MTTC • Recommended by Student Development & Program Departments

The Student Teacher Interview Applications Due – at the time of your interview http://sites.arbor.edu/soe/stapp/ The Application • Application, page 1 • Conviction Self-Report • Memo of Understanding (Professional Mentor Guest Form) • Major/Minor Course Listing (Include transfer courses) • Education Course Listing • Autobiography (follow instructions – 2 pages max.) • Criminal History Record check consent • Professional Organization/Liability Insurance Waiver Form • Criminal History Background Information Report

The Student Teacher Interview The 7 B’s • Be Proactive – Review Podcast and webpage information re: interview: http://sites.arbor.edu/soe/student-teaching-application/ • Be On-Time – Come Early • Be Prepared – Bring Your Completed Application • Be Professional – Dress to Impress • Be Specific – Know Your Needs/Express Your Desires (Petitions: Work, Coach, Take a class after ST?) • Be Aware – MDE regulations & SOE policy determine many things regarding your placement • Be Flexible – “It doesn’t really matter where you student teach as long as you have the opportunity to do so and are successful.”

  15. Student Teacher Restrictions “There is no such thing as a perfect student teaching placement. What there is however, is an opportunity for you to show that you possess the knowledge and skills to be recommended for teacher certification.” • Placements are made and determined by the program director • What schools have or have not had a recent student teacher? • What teachers are best suited for certain student teachers (principal determination)? • What type of experience is BEST for the student teacher’s GROWTH and future employment? • Mentoring teacher must be experienced (5 years +) and approved by building administrator or school district to have a student teacher

  16. Student Teacher Restrictions • You must student teach with a teacher holding the same certificate/endorsement you are pursuing and in specific classrooms. • Elementary: K-5 (6) ALL SUBJECTS w/Elementary certified teacher • Endorsement subject area student teaching is done at grades 6-8 • TESOL endorsement work is done in elementary setting • ECE – Student teaching restricted to K – Grade 3 • Secondary: 6-12 w/Teacher holding teaching certificate or endorsement for the secondary grade subject areas you are pursuing • Must student teach 50% > in major area • History and some sciences must be taught at HS level; not MS level • TESOL work is done in class • Special Education: K-12 w/Teacher holding LD endorsement (SM) & in appropriate SED setting w/LD students • Early Childhood: Birth to pre-K w/Elementary certified teacher holding an ECE endorsement (ZA, ZS)

  17. Student Teaching is somewhat like a dance competition….. The SOE @ Spring Arbor University: • Selects the contestants • Tells them which dance floor to report to • Tells them which dance moves they will perform • Determines what music will be played and when the dance will begin • Guides the dancers to better form • Evaluates their readiness to become a certified teacher • Recommends them for certification Your Job: - Smile & Dance your heart out!

The Placement Process My Job • I contact the school and gain their interest in you Your Job • You set up an interview (within 2 weeks) and report back to me about the interview My Job • I finalize the placement; establish supervisor(s) Your Job • You spend time in the teacher’s classroom DO NOT MAKE CHANGES in your placement! Communicate any changes regarding your placement immediately.

The Placement Process @ Distance Within USA • Meet with me 1 year in advance. • Make inquiries with school/schools (Your Job) • Have back up plans (local to SAU) Overseas • Work with Professor John Williams 2 years in advance. • Complete CCTECC application, SAU CCS program requirements, attend weekend training. • Have back up plans (local to SAU)

Getting Prepared: Next Steps • Complete pre-student teaching checklist (main campus only) • Review transcripts; calculate GPAs • Review # of Field Experience Hours • Determine if you are eligible to student teach – KNOW – Don’t Assume! • Clear all potential roadblocks • Retake classes to raise GPA • Attend to any dispositions (clear all potential roadblocks) • Review the Student Teaching Handbook (http://sites.arbor.edu/soe/stapp/) • Start substitute teaching • Develop your teacher and management skills • Strategically plan your resume • Tutor, Camp Counselor, VBS, Volunteer, Leadership • Talk to me, not your friends “Well I heard that…..”
