  3. Purposes for today’s meeting: To provide an overview of the student teaching approval process, expectations, and experience. (What’s Your Story?)

  4. Student Teaching is About: • You performing teaching tasks and providing evidence for MDE initial teacher certification recommendation. • You demonstrating levels of professionalism associated with the teaching profession, plan and deliver effective instruction. • You appropriately interact with and engage students in meaningful learning.

  5. Questions to Consider: Are you confident that: • You know how to professionally interact within a school environment? • You possess adequate and correct understanding of the content knowledge to be taught? • You know how to appropriately structure instruction in multiple ways for a variety of learners? • You are comfortable asserting yourself as the teacher-authority and effectively managing student behavior? • You know how to multi-task and manage classroom time in a manner that maximizes student learning?

Questions to Consider: Are you confident that: • You know how to determine and implement the best methods of assessment appropriate for the intended learning and performance skills required of students? • You can manage your time in and out of the classroom to stay on top of all student teaching related duties and assignments? • You can dedicate all of your consuming efforts and time to your successful completion of student teaching? • That in your heart of hearts, you are 110% certain that you want to be a teacher? That in your heart of hearts, you are 110% certain that you want to be a teacher? (Make sure you are not trying to please someone else’s plan for your life or that you view becoming a teacher as an “option” for something to do with your degree.)

Securing a Student Teaching Placement is Difficult Because… Teachers are evaluated on Performance & Merit • They are hesitant to commit to an unknown student teacher because they may prove to be problematic. Schools are under mandates to show improvements in student learning • Student teachers take time away from work the school is involved in. • Schools limit the number of student teachers they will accept. • Principals have very high expectations for student teachers and low tolerance for underperforming student teachers

  14. However…They haven't met You! Teachers and Principals want to see that you are: • Dependable – you can be counted on • Diligent – act and get things done well • Proactive – act well in advance of due dates • Professional – work is free of errors, you dress, talk, look, act like a teacher. • Knowledgeable – you know your content areas • Skilled & Experienced– you prove your ability to engage with students and demonstrate how to apply diverse instructional practices and assessment strategies, and classroom management. • Student & Result Oriented – teaching is about students’ learning. - Guest Teacher – you know your place…as a guest and learner.

Things That Can and Do Go Wrong • Lack of preparedness & experience • Lack of realistic self-perception • Want to be “liked”; Don’t want to be perceived as “mean” • Introverted/Lack teacher presence & voice • Outside expectations and interference • Family expectations and demands • Significant other’s interference - engagement

Qualifications for Student Teaching • Admitted to SOE • Completion of 120 Field Experience Hours • Satisfactory completion of all program course work (no grades below C). • Have addressed all negative dispositions satisfactorily. • GPA • 2.7 Cum. • 2.7 Major and/or Minor Areas • Pass MTTC • Elementary : Elementary MTTC • Secondary: Content area (Major) MTTC • Recommended by Student Development & Program Departments

The Student Teacher Interview The 7 B’s • Be Proactive – Review Podcast and webpage information re: interview: http://sites.arbor.edu/soe/student-teaching-application/ • Be On-Time – Come Early • Be Prepared – Bring Your Completed Application • Be Professional – Dress to Impress • Be Specific – Know Your Needs/Express Your Desires (Petitions: Work, Coach, Take a class after ST?) • Be Aware – MDE regulations & SOE policy determine many things regarding your placement • Be Flexible – “It doesn’t really matter where you student teach as long as you have the opportunity to do so and are successful.”

  20. Options for student teaching • Who Do You Know? • What Schools Have You Spent Time in? • What Teachers & Principals Have you Developed Relationships With? • Are there SOE Supervisors in the area?

  21. Where You WILL student teach. • Have a Backup Plan • Be Flexible • Accept What Becomes Available Can approved supervision be provided? Depends on whether a school responds to the inquiry.. Depends on whether there are teachers willing to take on a student teacher. Depends on whether a school provides the right combination of grade/subject level and teacher certification required. Depends on whether the placement is a good fit for the student teacher.

  22. When WILL YOU student teach? Student Teaching Can be Delayed

  23. Student Teacher Restrictions “There is no such thing as a perfect student teaching placement. What there is however, is an opportunity for you to show that you possess the knowledge and skills to be recommended for teacher certification.” • Placements are requested by SOE – School Administrators determine the placement. - What schools have or have not had a recent student teacher? • What teachers are best suited for certain student teachers (principal determination)? • What type of experience is BEST for the student teacher’s GROWTH and future employment? • Mentoring teacher must be experienced (5 years +) and approved by building administrator or school district to have a student teacher

Student Teacher Restrictions • You must student teach with a teacher holding the same certificate/endorsement you are pursuing and in specific classrooms. • Elementary: K-5 (6) ALL SUBJECTS w/Elementary certified teacher • Endorsement subject area student teaching is done at grades 6-8 • TESOL endorsement work is done in elementary setting • ECE – Student teaching restricted to K – Grade 3 • Secondary: 6-12 w/Teacher holding teaching certificate or endorsement for the secondary grade subject areas you are pursuing • Must student teach 50% > in major area • History and some sciences must be taught at HS level; not MS level • TESOL placements must have ELL student in the grade level classroom • Special Education: K-12 w/Teacher holding LD endorsement (SM) & in appropriate SED setting w/LD students • Early Childhood: Birth to pre-K w/Elementary certified teacher holding an ECE endorsement (ZA, ZS)

The Placement Process My Job • I contact the school and gain their interest in you Your Job • You set up an interview (within 2 weeks) and report back to me about the interview My Job • I finalize the placement; establish supervisor(s) Your Job • You spend time in the teacher’s classroom DO NOT MAKE CHANGES in your placement! Communicate any changes regarding your placement immediately.

The Placement Process @ Distance Out of State/Canada • Meet with me 1 year in advance. • Make inquiries with school/schools (Your Job) • Have back up plans (close to SAU supervisor) Overseas • Work with Professor John Williams 2 years in advance. • Complete CCTECC application, SAU CCS program requirements, attend weekend training. • Have back up plans (local to SAU)

Your friends probably heard wrong! 

Tentative Dates - Spring 2016 Student Teaching Weather Related Cancelations MAY require the extension of Student Teaching Placement Dates BeginEnd_________ • 15 week placements 02/01/1605/20/16 (Elementary or Secondary only) • 10/12 + 8 week placement 01/04/1603/25/16 (Elementary – 10/12 weeks) 03/28/1605/27/16 (ECE - 8 weeks)  • 10/12 + 10 week placement 01/04/1603/25/16 (Elementary – 10/12 weeks) 03/14/1606/03/16 or 06/10/16 (Special Ed - 10 weeks)  Starting and ending dates are tentative and subject to change per school calendars, the SAU Registrar and student financial requirements, and weather cancelations
