  1. PARTIAL QUOTIENT DIVISION • DIVIDING A 3-DIGIT NUMBER BY A 1-DIGIT NUMBER

  2. STEP 1 • WRITING THE PROBLEM

  3. HERE WE GO! • WHEN WRITING 642 DIVIDED BY 4... • 4 IS THE DIVISOR ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DIVISION 'HOUSE'

  4. TAKE NOTE! • IT'S OFTEN BETTER FOR BEGINNERS TO USE BENCHMARK NUMBERS, LIKE MULTIPLES OF 2, 5, & 10

  5. LET'S SEE HERE... • WELL, THE 6 IS IN THE HUNDREDS PLACE, SO...CAN I USE 100?

  6. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? • SINCE 4 TIMES 100 IS NOT GREATER THAN 600, WE CAN USE 100 AS A PARTIAL QUOTIENT

  7. MULTIPLY AND SUBTRACT • 100 x 4 = 400 • 642 - 400 = 242

  8. MOVING ON... • 2 is in the 100's place, but... • 100 x 4 is greater than 200, so... • Better go with 50 • 50 x 4 = 200 • That'll work

  9. MULTIPLY AND SUBTRACT AGAIN • 50 x 4 = 200 • 242 - 200 = 42 • 50 is your second partial quotient • 4 is in the 10's place... • 4 x 10 = 40, which is less than 42

  10. SUBTRACT AGAIN • 42 - 40 = 2 • 4 WON'T DIVIDE INTO 2, SO... • WE'RE ALMOST DONE... • 2 IS GOING TO BE THE REMAINDER

  11. WHAT ABOUT THE PARTIAL QUOTIENTS? • Okay, add up the partial quotients • You get 160

  12. WRAPPING IT UP • 160 IS THE QUOTIENT • 2 IS THE REMAINDER • 642 DIVIDED BY 4 = 160 R2

  13. THAT WAS DIVIDING WITH PARTIAL QUOTIENTS • THIS IS A PICTURE OF YOU GETTING OUT OF BED
