  1. Jeff Regester Physics Chris Bernhardt Chemistry Jason Cheek Mathematics Melinda Graham Mathematics Tim Martin Earth Science Eric Shilling Mathematics Greensboro Day School Hooke’s Law Orbital Motion Reduced-Gravity Flight Experiment

  2. What Happens When...? Isaac Newton’s First Law of Motion: an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion in a straight line with a constant speed... INERTIA

  3. Centripetal Force So, if something moves in a circle, there must be a reason. centripetal = centrum + petere (N. Latin) = center + to seek

  4. What keeps each of these things orbiting? Planets around a star... Moons around a planet... Electrons around a nucleus... Tennis ball around hand... And what shapes are these orbits? In our experiment...

  5. Hooke’s Law F=k·x F = forcex = stretch of the springk = spring constant

  6. Hooke’s Law Orbits Two masses, connected by a spring, will be set spinning by a turntable apparatus. When released, the masses will (in general) oscillate inward and outward as they also orbit the system center of mass.

  8. The apparatus under construction

  9. Ellington Field Fiona, our wonderful NASA mentor!

  10. Tours

  11. Final Preparations Test Readiness Review (TRR) glovebox modifications

  12. Flight Day!

  13. FLIGHT 1 ACCELEROMETER DATA two Mars parabolas two Moon parabolas thirty 0-g parabolas...

  14. For more info... Go to the HLOM project website for... • photos and video • raw and analyzed data • numerical models • articles, papers and classroom activities as they are written http://academic.greensboroday.org/~regesterj/data/rgo-HLOM/

  15. Who will get sick on the 0g flight? Results of a student poll prior to flight, as a histogram.
