  1. Extraterrestrial Storms Sage Scoville

  2. Hurricanes on Jupiter and Saturn • Hurricanes happen on other planets just like they do here on Earth • Ones on Jupiter and Saturn tend to be the biggest • Some get to the size of earth and bigger • They just don’t cause a lot of damage because there is nothing to destroy • These storms generate their power from their own internal heat and use the moisture from beneath the clouds

  3. The great red spot • Jupiter’s biggest storm cloud is known as the great red spot it has hurricane characteristics • Its so big you could fit 3 whole earths inside of it. • It has periodically been going on since the 1665

  4. The great white spot • Huge storms on Saturn erupt known as great white spots. • The last time one erupted was 2010 in December • It was a thunderstorm that ranged to 6200 miles • The storm is still going on and some of the clouds have wrapped all the way around the ring of the planet

  6. Neptune’s cyclone • Last year astronomers spotted cyclones on the south poles of Neptune • They are thousands of miles wide • This cyclone was very similar to one found on Saturn’s south pole a couple years ago • These storms have a very well developed eye just like here on Earth

  7. Mars dust storms • On Mars a dust storm can develop in a matter of hours and envelope the entire planet within a few days • All dust storms are powered by the sun. Solar heating warms the atmosphere moving the air and then picking the dust off the ground • With these storms it is hard for us to send rovers on mars. • The Viking mission of 1976 recorded the 2 biggest dust storms

  8. Causes of Saturn’s storm • Scientist don’t know the exact reasoning of these storms • These storms just save up energy for long periods of time and just let loose at random. • Scientists are looking for answers as to why these storms happen

  9. Causes of Jupiter’s storm • Most scientists believe that the spot was started by simple planetary changes in climate and atmosphere • Other scientists believe that a planet or asteroid had collided into the planet leaving a refuse in the area it fell into • According to that theory a planet or asteroid the size of Venus would have had to hit the planet to make a storm that big.

  10. Causes of Neptune's storm • The cyclones of Neptune are caused by the difference in temperature between the heat producing cores and the frigid cloud tops • Neptune has the strongest winds in the solar system and they blow the winds the opposite way the planet spins causing the cyclones
