  1. STORMS STORMS “SEVERE STORMS ARE ASSOCIATED WTH LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS. IN THESE SYSTEMS, WARM, MOIST AIR RISES AND COOLS. WATER VAPOR IN THE COOLING AIR CONDENSES, FORMING CLOUDS FOLLOWED BY PRECIPITATION.” By Amy & Elizabeth “SEVERE STORMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS. IN THESE SYSTEMS, WARM, MOISTAIR RISES AND COOLS.”

  2. SUMMARYOF LESSON

  3. WHAT IS A STORM? WHAT IS A STORM? STORM: ANY DISTURBED STATE OF AN ASTRONOMICAL BODY’S ATMOSHERE. THUNDERSTORM: A STORM THAT DELIVERS LIGHTNING, THUNDER, AND HEAVY RAINS. BLIZZARD: A SNOWSTORM WITH STRONG WINDS ANDLOW TEMPERATURES. EXAMPLES OF STORMS: BLIZZARDS,THUNDERSTORMS, TORNADOS, HURRICANES, OCEAN STORMS, ETC. ANY DISTURBED STATE OF AN ASTRONOMICAL BODY’S ATMOSPHERE.

  4. THUNDERSTORMS • FORMS ALONG COLD FRONTS. • NEEDS MOIST, WARM/ COLD AIR; RISING AIR IS HOTTER THAN SURROUNDING AIR. • FIRST CUMULUS STAGE, THEN MATURE STAGE, WHERE LIGHTING COMES IN. • IF TOO COLD, IT LOSES ENERGY AND DIES.

  5. TORNADOS • NARROW, SPINNING COLUMN OF FAST- MOVING AIR. • TRIGGERED BY THUNDERSTORMS. • MOST POWERFUL HAVE A • WEDGE SHAPE, CAN BE 1-2 MILES. • - DIE IN THE ROPE STAGE, WHIP LIKE.

  6. HURRICANES • SUSTAINED WINDS NEAR ITS CENTER (119 KM) • GROWS NEAR TROPICAL WATERS, RELIES ON WATER VAPOR • DIES WHEN REACHES LANDOR LEAVES OCEAN

  7. BLIZZARDS • SNOWSTORM WITH STRONG WINDS AND SEVER TEMP. • CAUSED BY COLD WEATHER COLLIDING WITH HIGHER TEMP. • BLIZZARDS CAUSE HEAVY SNOWFALL • ALSO BE CAUSED BY LEFTOVER SNOW BEING BLOWN UP BY HIGH WINDS

  8. OUTSIDE INFO OUTSIDE INFO. THERE ARE MANY UNIQUE STORMS THAT ARE NOT AS FAMOUS, LIKE FIRESTORMS, OCEAN STORMS, DUST DEVILS, ETC. DUST DEVILS: THEY’RE STORMS THAT LAST LONGER THAN OTHERS; THEY ARE FORMED IN MILD WEATHER, AND ARE NOT USUALLY TOO DANGEROUS.

  9. OUTSIDE INFO [CONT.] OCEAN STORMS • CYCOLNIC STORM THAT BEGINS OR GAINS STRENGH AT SEA. • HAS AIR MASS THAT ROTATES AROUND LOW PRESSURE CENTER. • VERY DISTRUCTIVE, CAUSES LANDFALL. OCEAN STORMS: STORMS

  10. FIRE STORMS • LARGE FIRE WHICH STARTS TO SUSTAIN OWN WIND SYSTEM. • OCCURS WHERE THERE ARE GULF STREAM WINDS. • CALLED FIRE TORNADO/ FIRE WHIRL.

  11. DUST DEVIL • OCCURS IN AREAS WITH INTENSE HEATING. • IS A WHIRLWIND THAT PICKS UP DEBRIS. • HOT AIR INTO VORTEX, INCREACES SPEED AND SIZE.

  12. Any Questions? Bye-Bye!
