  1. Bugs and Beetles:Moisture Day 9: May 14th, 2013

  2. Objectives: • I can identify and describe terrestrial environments and the effects of environmental factors on organisms. Focus Question: • How much moisture do isopods and beetles prefer?

  3. REVIEW: Darkling Beetles (Tenebrio) • Antenna • Head • Abdomen • Thorax Legs

  4. REVIEW: Darkling Beetles (Tenebrio) • An insect. • Has 3 body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen). • Has 3 sets of legs. • Has 2 antenna to sense the environment around them. • They are the adult form of mealworms. • They go through metamorphosis in their life cycle. • They have wings but cannot fly.

  5. REVIEW: Isopods (Armidillidium) • Antenna • Segmented Body • Legs

  6. REVIEW: Isopods (Armidillidium) • Isopod is a Greek word • Iso = “similar or equal” • Pod = “foot” • They have segmented bodies and 7 sets of legs. • All 14 of their legs function the same. • We have Armidillidium (roly-poly) isopods which can roll into a ball. • They have a dome shaped, armor like shell. • They come in a variety of colors.

  7. Testing Moisture • In order to find out the best environment for our isopods and beetles we will need to test two factors: • Moisture • Light • Today we will begin our test of moisture by conducting a two part controlled experiment.

  8. Testing Moisture Materials • 6 animal runways (which have already been prepared). • Dry soil • Moist soil • Wet soil • 3 Dixie cups • 9 isopods • 9 beetles

  9. Testing Moisture Procedures • Set out six of the animals runways (which have already been prepared). • In each runway, place one pile of dry soil, one pile of moist soil, and one pile of wet soil. • Place 3 isopods in three of the runways (3 isopods per runway). • Place 3 beetles in the other three runways (3 beetles per runway). • Allow the isopods and beetles 5 minutes to explore. • Record where the isopods and beetles end up after 5 minutes. • Allow the isopods and beetles time to explorer overnight. • We will record the long run results tomorrow at the beginning of class.

  10. Vocabulary • Preferred Environment A set of living conditions that an organism appears to choose over other conditions.

  11. Review of Our Objectives: • I can identify and describe terrestrial environments and the effects of environmental factors on organisms. Review Our Focus Question: • How much moisture do isopods and beetles prefer?
